Delhi: Massive fire breaks out in hotel, 9 die

Two Telugus, one from Telangana state and another from Andhra Pradesh, were among the 17 people killed in a fire at Hotel Arpit Palace in New Delhi early on Tuesday.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit but the evacuation was hampered by narrow corridors, panelled in wood.

Among the dead in the fire incident were a child and a woman who tried to escape inferno by jumping through a window in the hotel room they occupied.

Three Myanmar citizens staying at the hotel were missing, the NDTV news network reported.

A number of hotel guests have been killed, including a child, when they were suffocated in smoke from a severe fire that ripped through a hotel. Those injured have been sent to the hospital.

The blaze, in which 35 people were injured, broke out on the first floor of the building at around 3:30 am due to a short-circuit, preliminary investigation suggested.

The fire was doused around 7 am, however, the rescue operation went on for four hours and the firefighters and Delhi police officials were able to rescue 35 people.

A large wedding party had booked out most of the hotel, and most of the victims were sleeping when the fire began. But the building appeared to have six floors, including a basement and a kitchen built on top of the roof, Jain said.

Also, an eye-witness said:"Within minutes the fire accompanied by dense smoke engulfed the whole hotel, leaving nearly no space for the occupants to rush to safety".

Satyendar Jain, Delhi's urban development minister said that the hotel will be investigated for building code violations.

The minister, who visited the site of the tragedy in central Delhi's Karol Bagh locality, said he was sure that there would be a violation of norms.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in a tweet.

In recent months, officials have shut down a number of shops and restaurants in some of Delhi's most exclusive neighbourhoods for not following fire safety measures.
