Apple gives education grant to USA teen for FaceTime bug find

Grant Thompson, a high school student in Tucson, happened upon the bug last month while trying to get his friends together to play the video game "Fortnite", he told ABC News.

Apple confirmed it's going to pay Grant's family in addition to making a gift of an undisclosed amount toward his education. News about his reward came on the day that Apple issued a software update that fixed the bug. On a Mac, head to Apple menu System Preferences Software Update.

The US technology firm has just released a major security update for its mobile devices which fixes a serious flaw with the popular FaceTime app.

So if your phone seems sluggish after iOS 12.1.3 upgrade and if you wish to downgrade back to a lower version, it seems you simply can not as Apple has blocked it. The update, iOS 12.1.4, was made available for download on February 7 and follows shortly on the heels of two Congressional lawmakers publicly demanding answers from Apple CEO Tim Cook about the major privacy screw up. So, if you like group FaceTime calls, this update is a must-have for you (and those you called).

The company also says they uncovered another flaw during a "thorough security audit of the FaceTime service".

While you may think that's due to a lower severity level for issues relating to the Live Photos feature in FaceTime, the iOS Foundation framework, and the I/O Kit framework, Twitter user Ben Hawkes claims two of these lesser-known vulnerabilities were in fact "exploited in the wild as 0day".

That would initiate a group Face Time call including yourself and the audio of the other person you called, whether they answered the call or not.

"iOS 12.1.4 provides important security updates and is recommended for all users."

Information about the bug first emerged in late January and revealed that some Apple users could secretly listen to people they called via FaceTime even if the recipient did not accept the call.

On supported devices, simply open Settings - General - Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions.
