US Senate rejects Donald Trump’s rushed withdrawal from Syria and Afghanistan

US Senate rejects Donald Trump’s rushed withdrawal from Syria and Afghanistan

"Just what America needs, another paid holiday and a bunch of government workers being paid to go out and work for I assume our folks-our colleagues on the other side, on their campaigns", McConnell said.

McConnell's amendment seem to mark a day of taking aim at Trump's more controversial foreign policy positions.

"We will be looking at a national emergency because I don't think anything's going to happen" concerning an agreement, Trump told reporters at the White House. "The way in which the president announced his Syria withdrawal, with no plan, without consultation with Congress or our allies or consideration of the implications for our partners is not in our interests".

"They have taken a bill that had broad - maybe unanimous bipartisan support - and tried to turn it into a political weapon", said Sen.

"Congress doesn't have to have to cosign Trump foreign policy trial balloons, but they ought to articulate their own responsible withdrawal plan that replaces US troops and airstrikes with smart diplomacy and targeted humanitarian aid", Rainwater told Common Dreams.

There are now 14,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan and some 2,000 in Syria. "I'm for whatever works, which means avoiding a shutdown and avoiding the president feeling he should declare a national emergency", McConnell said during his weekly news conference in the Capitol.

The measure divided Senate Democrats, with many arguing that rebuking Trump was not worth the cost of greenlighting endless war.

On Tuesday the top USA intelligence chief said that the Islamic State group still has "thousands" of fighters that it can rebuild into a cohesive force in any vacuum left in the war-torn country. Trump began drawing down troops in the country in late December.

Elaborating on his willingness to withdraw from Afghanistan after the Senate voted to oppose any such pullout, President Trump confirmed on Friday that "serious negotiations" are ongoing and could result in a peace deal with the United States withdrawing.

The amendment by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., comes after Trump called for a drawdown of troops in both of those countries.

Thursday also marks the most stark divide yet between the top Republican in the Senate and the president.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: We have won against ISIS.

"Democrats also want taxpayers on the hook for generous new benefits for federal bureaucrats and federal employees", McConnell said. For aspiring reformers of the way the United States conducts itself overseas, it's rather inconsistent of McConnell to invoke a need for congressional oversight, when there has been no greater handmaiden of status-quo approaches elsewhere.

Danielle Pletka, a senior vice president at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said lawmakers are doing exactly what they should - asserting themselves as a separate but equal branch of government that has been largely dormant on foreign policy.

With the fresh McConnell drama, Trump's foreign policy is under strain on the Hill from both hawkish and realist right.
