US Democratic governor under fire for racist yearbook photo

US Democratic governor under fire for racist yearbook photo

"The Virginia Black Legislative Caucus perhaps explained best in its statement why the photo is resulting in calls for Northam's resignation: ". what has been revealed is disgusting, reprehensible, and offensive.

Ralph Northam has told a source he now believes it is not him in a racist yearbook photo and, despite mounting pressure to resign, that he will not do so, according a top Virginia Democratic source who spoke to the governor on Saturday. "The first step is to offer my sincerest apology and to state my absolute commitment to living up to the expectations Virginians set for me when they elected me to be their governor".

Northam, a 59-year-old pediatric neurologist and Army veteran, graduated from Norfolk medical school in 1984.

Northam's page in the 1984 yearbook from Eastern Virginia Medical School shows a picture of a person in blackface and another wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood.

The governor of the U.S. state of Virginia, Democrat Ralph Northam, was embroiled in controversy on Friday, when a racist photo from his university yearbook page was released by an online media outlet. "But I accept responsibility for my past actions, and I am ready to do the hard work of regaining your trust".

The Virginia state senator Louise Lucas, a Democrat, told the Washington Post that Northam had called her on Saturday morning to say he didn't think he was either of the people in the photo.

Ralph Northam vowed Saturday he will not resign, saying he was mistaken when he admitted Friday to appearing in a racist photo in his medical school yearbook.

The group said it felt betrayed by Friday's revelation and said the legacy of "slavery, racism, and Jim Crow has been an albatross around the necks of African Americans for over 400 years".

The NAACP agreed that party affiliation did not matter, with President Derrick Johnson releasing a statement saying "black face in any manner is always racist and never okay". Virginia GOP Chair Jack Wilson called for Northam's resignation nearly immediately after the yearbook page surfaced.

"Governor Northam has lost all moral authority and should resign immediately", former USA vice president Joe Biden, a Democrat weighing a 2020 presidential run, said on Twitter.

Ralph Northam's office is a dumpster fire.

The Virginia Democratic Party issued a statement demanding Northam's immediate resignation.

"I believe now and then that I am not either of the people in this photo", Northam said.

She responded: "Then you waited too long to say it wasn't you".

Northam's departure would mean current Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, a Democrat who is only the second African-American to win statewide office in Virginia, would be the next governor.

After meeting with Northam, Virginia's Black Legislative Caucus had made up its mind.

"There's no question the tide turned", said one ally, who had been briefed by the governor's senior staff. Donald McEachin, Abigail Spanberger and Elaine Luria, also urged Northam to step down.

Not only was this false, but the mistake is insulting to Virginia Republicans who remember the 2017 election in which Northam won the governorship. He's a member of a predominantly black church on Virginia's Eastern Shore, where he grew up. He said the photo comes "with pain beyond what many of us can even understand".
