Acting AG says Mueller’s probe is ‘close to being completed’

Acting AG says Mueller’s probe is ‘close to being completed’

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, who also announced fraud charges against Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei, stated that the Russian interference investigation has nearly finished up.

"I have been fully briefed on the investigation, and I look forward to Director Mueller delivering the final report", said Whitaker.

If confirmed by the Senate, Barr would oversee Mueller's investigation into whether Trump's 2016 presidential campaign conspired with Russian Federation. But he has yet to accuse anyone close to the Trump campaign of conspiring with the Kremlin to hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton and help Trump win the election.

Washington Post reporter Devlin Barrett calls the news a "big deal" because, he says, it's the first time a senior administration official has said the investigation is close to being finished. Justice Department ethics review determined that recusal would be appropriate, but not required, in his case.

According to Justice Department regulations, Mueller has to provide a report to the attorney general at the conclusion of his investigation laying out his prosecution decisions.

Barr submitted a number of written answers as part of that confirmation process that were released publicly on Monday.

William Barr, Trump's pick to permanently replace Sessions, pledged earlier this month that he will, if confirmed, make Mueller's findings public to whatever extent possible.

The president has decried the investigation as a partisan "witch hunt". The charges have laid out intense interest by Trump's associates in benefiting from Russian efforts to sway the election in his favor, but have not accused the president or any of his aides of participating in the scheme. They also come just days after Mueller's office unveiled an indictment of Roger Stone, a longtime friend of Trump.

The investigation most recently ensnared a long-time confidant of President Donald Trump, political operative Roger Stone, and has led to the conviction of Mr Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort. Stone was charged with false statements, obstruction, and witness tampering.
