3-year-old boy goes missing from grandmother's backyard

3-year-old boy goes missing from grandmother's backyard

Casey Hathaway had been playing with two older children in the town of Ernul on Tuesday but didn't come inside with the others, Fox News reported.

Professional searchers covered wooded areas Thursday night in the search for Casey.

A release from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said he was discovered by a professional search and rescue crew in Craven County.

Authorities said the boy appeared to be in good health and was being evaluated at a hospital.

Casey Lynn Hathaway went missing from the backyard of his grandmother's home Tuesday afternoon, Hughes said, according to ABC New Bern affiliate WCTI.

Hughes said earlier Thursday they were working around the clock and navigating rugged and hard terrain in search of Casey.

"It's a stressful time for the family and everybody involved", Hughes said.

Rescuers walked through waist-high water to reach him, the sheriff later said.

The FBI, NCIS and dozens of volunteers initially joined the effort to find the boy.

Authorities have employed helicopters, drones and K-9 units, Craven County Emergency Management Director Stanley Kite said.

Facing heavy rain, gusty winds and low visibility, rescuers and law enforcement combed the hard Craven County, North Carolina, terrain - focusing on up to 1,000 acres of heavily wooded areas.

Casey was receiving medical treatment at the CarolinaEast Medical Center, with his family in the room.

The boy authorities described as 25 pounds and 2 feet 4 inches tall was stuck out in conditions so bad that volunteers were turned away from the search. Divers also assessed nearby ponds, WTVD reported.

"We initially went into the search where he was last seen and that's where we started working it out methodically", Hughes said.

Harsh weather that included heavy rains and winds impacted the search for the child.

'Additional search assets will return in the morning.

The sheriff's office had asked residents to check their properties for signs of the missing boy.

"I don't think the child was adequately clothed to be out in this", Sheriff Chris Hughes told WBTV.
