Total lunar eclipse: Super Wolf Blood Moon visible in the Netherlands

Total lunar eclipse: Super Wolf Blood Moon visible in the Netherlands

Also called the Storm Moon and Hunger Moon because of it being at the coldest time of year, the Super Snow Moon may be a good time to get used to going out at dusk.

"There will be other total lunar eclipses between 2019 and 2032 but they will happen as the Moon sets or rises from Ireland thus spoiling the view", said editor of Astronomy Ireland magazine, David Moore.

There's much that scientists can learn about the moon during total lunar eclipses, Jolliff said.

The website also explains why this type of eclipse is rare. Starting at 9:34 p.m. central time, a dark, curved shade will become visible on the face of the moon, according to Michelle Nichols, director of public observing at the Adler Planetarium.

For Sunday, the label "blood" refers to the color the moon will appear during the eclipse. No problem. The next time the Earth will shield sunlight from a full moon will be on May 26, 2021.

Finally, the "wolf moon" is just another name for the first full moon of the year.

The Moon will be completely covered by the Earth's shadow for over 60 minutes. "But it's really just a full lunar eclipse".

This Sky & Telescope map shows the visibility region for the total lunar eclipse of January 20-21, 2019. At the last total lunar eclipse, a micromoon - when the Moon is furthest away, so smaller in the sky - meant that totality lasted for 1 hour and 38 minutes.

The peak of the eclipse will occur at approximately 5:43am GMT for viewers in the UK. And that's because the only light the moon gets is from sunlight reflecting off the Earth and the Earth's atmosphere.

Just as we head into the dead of winter, skywatchers get a chance to witness one of nature's most picturesque events as a larger than average full moon undergoes a total eclipse and blushes red this Sunday.

"It's a great way for people to connect with the sky, with an object that people are familiar with and that you don't need special equipment to go outside and see". The lunar eclipse will be over at around 8.50am.

The reason this is called a Blood Moon is because during a total lunar eclipse, the moon appears to take a reddish colour, hence the name Blood Moon. For the upcoming eclipse, the "orchestra seats" will most definitely be in North America, which will see this celestial performance high in the midwinter sky.

The moon also will appear large, because it will be at a point in its elliptical orbit that's close to the Earth. The next extreme supermoon, when the moon is as close to the Earth as it can be, will be January 21, 2023. That should be around 9:12 p.m.

Eclipse totality will end by 5.43am GMT and partial eclipsing will begin.

"The wolf part of it is related to the mythology around a full moon during January". All you have to do is look out the window or step outside the house.
