Woman dies after getting trapped inside clothes donation box in Toronto

Woman dies after getting trapped inside clothes donation box in Toronto

Once again, the man was found lodged in the charity donation bin and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We're all just devastated".

"If someone is going to go into your bin and take your product, that's going to have to be how it is for now".

As recently as 2014, a person getting stuck inside a donation bin was so rare - and seemed so benign - that it was cause for jokes.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene in Toronto, Canada, on Tuesday, where rescuers cut the metal supports on the bin's hatch to free the woman.

He said the manufacturers of these types of bins - and there are at least nine or 10 different versions in Canada - most likely didn't account for desperate people trying to get inside of them when they were designed.

Another friend said that she was "beyond sad" to learn of Papineau's death. Ventura blinked back tears when discussing Chrystal's tragic death.

Whether it's the best way to collect clothing.

RangeView Fabricating, a Toronto-area company that produces such bins, is in the process of modifying bins for improved safety.

"We are saddened at this awful and tragic incident", media relations and communications manager Daniel Koren said in an email to CBC Toronto.

The latest incident in that province occurred just over a week ago, when a 34-year-old man was discovered in a donation bin in West Vancouver.

This is not the first time someone has died after attempting to climb into a donation bin.

Agro said the bins most commonly involved in deaths are mailbox-style designs with an internal flap preventing people from reaching inside. They will also be removing "anti-theft capabilities" from future models.

Vancouver Fire Rescue's Jonathan Gormick explains how the bin's design can be inescapable.

A number of towns and non-profits have called on the bins to be removed.

"Shut them all down", she said.

"Unfortunately, in the initial stage of design, they never considered 'What if someone got inside?"
