Networks Fact-Check Trump Speech After Criticism Of Decision To Air

The US president's address came as a way to inform his fellow Americans about the ongoing partial government shutdown, which is now into its 18th day, and to increase people's pressure on the opposition Democrats.

In a speech full of false claims and misleading statistics, Trump painted a portrait of a crisis at the US-Mexico border even as the rate of illegal immigration has steadily fallen over the years and in 2018 reached its lowest point in more than a decade.

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith disputed claims made by Donald Trump during his first prime-time Oval Office address in an unusual sign of disagreement between the president and his favored news channel.

They accused Trump of holding government workers hostage to get his wall and Schumer said that a way of the standoff would be to delink the wall and the shutdown by having a budget passed while continuing debate on the border barrier.

She said the Democrats also want a secure border, but Mr Trump's wall is not the solution, as she offered options including building infrastructure and installing new technology.

"Unfortunately, the President just got up and walked out", Schumer told reporters.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski recently urged colleagues to approve spending bills that would reopen various agencies, "so that whether it's the Department of the Interior or it is the IRS, those folks can get back to work".

Trump has been discussing the idea of declaring a national emergency to allow him to circumvent Congress and move forward with the wall. More than 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or required to work without pay and services have been also disrupted for many other Americans.

All the major TV networks, and some cable ones, have now chose to televise a Tuesday address by Donald Trump concerning border security and "the wall".

The shutdown is the third under Trump's watch and the longest since 1995. Democrats controlling the House have agreed to fund only United States dollars 1.3 billion for border security. More than 38 million Americans who rely on food stamps could see them reduced should the shutdown continue into next month.

He said Trump "slammed the table" in frustration as he was leaving.

During his successful run for the White House in 2016, Trump's most fervent supporters cheered his call for a wall that he said Mexico would pay for. They weren't listening to us.

But he made no mention of such a declaration in his speech. Kimmel quipped. "That's either a hall or the White House morgue, I'm not sure".

"This is the tragic reality of illegal immigration on our southern border", he added. A source close to Trump's orbit argued that the president's frequent use of "illegal alien", a term the previous administration was loath to employ, bore the fingerprints of Trump consigliere Stephen Miller, who oversees speechwriting in the West Wing.
