US House Democrats challenge Trump on shutdown

US House Democrats challenge Trump on shutdown

On Thursday night, her first night as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, new Michigan Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib spoke to a crowd of supporters and made a decision to personify the famous statement of Michelle Obama that Democrats go high when the GOP goes low, saying of President Trump, "We're gonna go in there and we're gonna impeach the mother***er".

The House of Representatives first voted on Thursday to approve a stopgap spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security that would not allocate any new wall funding, in a rebuke to the President. "A wall is an immorality".

A vote on a package of six appropriations bills late Thursday night passed 241-190, while lawmakers also approved a narrow measure to extend funding for the Department of Homeland Security until February 8 by a tally of 239-192. "So we would hope that they would reconsider and would support the very bills that pass the Senate", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY. Republicans still control the Senate, creating a divided legislative branch.

Mr McConnell called the Democrats' move a "total nonstarter" and a "political sideshow". If they reject funding bills for departments unconnected to border security, Republicans could be seen as holding those agencies and their roughly 800,000 affected workers hostage to Trump's desire to build a wall.

Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, was elected as Speaker of the House for a second time - becoming the third most powerful politician in the US.

Trump met behind closed doors at the White House with Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat who will take over as speaker of the House, and Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, but there were no indications any progress had been made in resolving the impasse. "We are sending them back exactly, word for word, what they have passed", Pelosi said. "It's an old way of thinking, it isn't cost effective".

While much of the attention has gone to Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the weeks leading up to the swearing in ceremony, Tlaib had a noteworthy first day in Washington.

It may be a new day and a new Congress, but hope is already a scarce commodity.

Palestinian-American congresswoman on Trump: We will 'impeach this motherf---er'
Pelosi elected Speaker as Democrats take control of House of Representatives

As of Thursday, 102 women serve in the House, an all-time high, including 36 newly elected members and a record 43 women of colour. The opening ushered in a new era of divided government in Washington, with Democrats intent on checking the Republican's turbulent presidency almost two years into his term.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Washington, a leading progressive, told the Washington Post that Pelosi has committed to hold the first congressional hearings on Medicare-for-All legislation.

There are ideological differences between numerous newcomers and the Democratic party's establishment. Rashida Tlaib used an expletive Thursday in pushing for impeaching President Donald Trump.

How has the shutdown come about?

The Visitor's Center at Jamaia Bay Wildlife Refuge, part of the 27,000-acre Gateway National Recreation Area, remained closed, January 3, 2019, in NY, on the 12th day of a partial government shutdown. The bill passed by 239-192, with five Republicans joining Democrats.

Democrats won the majority of the House in the November mid-term elections, and the new representatives were sworn in on Thursday.

Republicans blasted the vote as a pointless political gimmick that would do little to provide the resources necessary to secure the border, and said Democrats were not negotiating in good faith. Talks are expected to resume on Friday.
