China mum on detained Canadian, queries status of employer

China mum on detained Canadian, queries status of employer

The U.S. government says travelers should still "Exercise Increased Caution" on trips to China, which is the second level of advisory on a four tier system.

By way of comparison, there are nearly 900 Canadians in a similar situation in the U.S.

"We have said here that these two Canadian citizens are under investigation in accordance with law for engaging in activities that undermine China's national security", said the prosecutor, Zhang Jun, at a briefing in Beijing.

"China does not recognise dual nationality". The three family members, all American citizens, arrived in China in June under USA passports to visit the ailing father of Liu's wife.

Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies, was arrested December 1 in Vancouver at the request of U.S. officials who accused her of violating financial sanctions against Iran.

"Without a doubt, these two Canadian citizens in China violated our country's laws and regulations, and are now undergoing investigation according to procedure", Prosecutor General Zhang Jun said during a briefing in Beijing.

China has said that Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are being held on grounds of threatening national security.

Chinese law allows police to detain those suspected of vaguely worded "national security" crimes and hold them under residential surveillance at a secret location for up to six months, with no access to lawyers or family visits.

Asked if they were anxious about travelling to China, the parliamentarians said they had been well briefed by Canadian Global Affairs officials.

December 7: Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada's envoy to China has briefed Chinese officials about Meng's case. However, due to the escalation of a diplomatic spat between China and Canada, the detention of three Canadians was officially revealed.

The State Department warned that citizens "may be detained without access to US consular services or information about their alleged crime".

Neither China nor Canada have directly linked the two men's cases, but they led to speculation of retaliation for Meng's arrest.

The State Department warned that travel bans are now increasingly being applied to US nationals living in China, who have been "harassed and threatened" when they try to leave. A Level 3 travel warning advises people to reconsider their travel, while a Level 4 warning says, "Do not travel", according to Anadolu Agency.

The Canadian government has said several times it sees no explicit link between the arrest of Meng, the daughter of Huawei's founder, and the detentions of Canadian citizens. "Chinese citizens and USA citizens of Chinese heritage may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment".
