USA spy captured in Moscow

USA spy captured in Moscow

Russia's Federal Security Service detained a US citizen in Moscow on suspicion of espionage on December 28, according to a statement on its website on Monday.

A U.S. citizen has been arrested in Moscow and accused of spying in what could be an attempt to get a Russian woman out of prison in Virginia.

Russia's Tass news agency said Whelan faces between 10 and 20 years in jail if found guilty.

"Russia's obligations under the Vienna Convention require them to provide consular access", the State Department said.

There was no immediate comment from the White House or U.S. State Department.

It provided no further details.

The detention of Whelan comes weeks after a Russian woman pleaded guilty in a USA court to acting as an agent for the Kremlin. She admitted to being involved in an organized effort, backed by Russian officials, to try to lobby influential Americans in the National Rifle Association and the Republican Party.

Tensions between Moscow and Washington have intensified since Russian Federation annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

There's no connection between Butina and the arrest of Whelan, but Russian Federation has a history of arresting foreigners to use for prisoner swaps to get its people back.
