White House chief: Trump not building a 'wall'

White House chief: Trump not building a 'wall'

As a partial shutdown of the United States government entered its eighth day, with no quick end in sight, the Republican president was in Washington, sending out tweets attacking Democrats and talking up possibly improved relations with China.

Asked on Sunday if the President will sign or veto a bill that Democrats pass, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" that "it depends what's in it", but added that Trump is "ready to negotiate". Absent "10 Democrat votes", the president said on Twitter, "we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown".

There would be no deal in which Trump offered legal status to all DACA-eligible illegal aliens - those brought to the U.S.as minors, even if they did not apply for DACA status - according to Graham.

Former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci said Sunday that President Trump's strategies heading into 2019 are very beneficial to Americans.

Fox News has learned that behind the scenes this weekend, several senators are discussing a new potential compromise to end the ongoing partial federal government shutdown.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly looks on as US President Donald Trump meets with North Korean defectors in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC. "He's in the - he's in the White House".

"To be honest, it's not a wall", Mr Kelly said, adding the mix of technological enhancements and "steel slat" barriers the president now wants along the border resulted from conversations with law enforcement professionals on the ground. She says of the negotiations: "It is with them". "But always saying wall or no wall is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border".

Graham proposed to help two groups of immigrants get approval to continue living in the U.S: about 700,000 young "Dreamers" brought into the USA illegally as children and about 400,000 people receiving temporary protected status because they are from countries struggling with natural disasters or armed conflicts.

On Saturday Trump blamed opposition Democrats "and their pathetic immigration policies" for the deaths of two Guatemalan children who crossed the border illegally with relatives who were taken into custody by US Border Patrol.

"It is with them", she said, explaining why Trump was not reaching out to Democrats.

He said the President was now pushing for a steel slat structure, rather than a concrete wall.

Other Republicans this weekend kept their fire trained on Democrats, seeking to shift blame for the shutdown - now the third-longest lapse in U.S. history, affecting about 800,000 federal workers.

"The president is firm in his commitment to make sure we get money for border security, and there will never be a 60-vote deal in the Senate that doesn't include money for border security-slash-wall".

For instance, members of the US Coast Guard will receive their final paychecks of the year on Monday, the service said in a statement on its website on Friday after previously warning that payments would be delayed due to the shutdown. But a previous attempt to reach a compromise that addressed the status of Dreamers broke down a year ago as a result of escalating White House demands.

In the interim, thousands of employees of federal agencies such as the Homeland Security, Justice, Commerce, Interior, Transportation, Agriculture and other departments were staying at home on furlough or soon to be working without pay.

The White House has not directly engaged in weeks with the House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who has all but locked up the support she needs to win the speaker's gavel after the new Congress convenes on Thursday.
