Mulvaney: Pelosi stalling shutdown talks over House speaker bid

Mulvaney: Pelosi stalling shutdown talks over House speaker bid

The comment comes after a barrage of tweets from U.S. President Donald Trump, where he threatened to shut down the southern border among continuing disputes with Democrats over the continuing partial government shutdown, the Associated Press reports.

Any formula to fully fund the USA government will have to be approved by both houses of Congress and signed by Trump.

"He canceled his plans for Christmas, now he's canceled his plans for New Year's", Mulvaney said.

Trump had told people he was looking forward to the annual New Year's Eve gala held at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, which he nearly never misses, according to people familiar with the event.

Mulvaney said the President is "very heavily engaged on (the shutdown negotiations) on a minute-by-minute basis".

The Republican leader's warning came as a partial federal government shutdown was set to drag on into next week, with legislators in Washington failing to reach a compromise over Trump's insistence on funding the border barrier. He tweeted Thursday evening that Democrats may be able to block him now, "but we have the issue, Border Security". The President has requested $5 billion to pay for the wall.

President Donald Trump threatened to close the US southern border if Democratic lawmakers refuse to appropriate funding for his proposed wall, in a Friday morning tweet.

For instance, Mulvaney focused mostly on Pelosi during one Sunday morning television, saying she is "beholden to her left wing to where she can not be seen as agreeing with the president on anything until she's actually speaker".

Representative Hakeem Jeffries of NY, who will soon be the fifth most senior House Democrat, told The Times that on January 3, "House Democrats will get the opportunity to show the American people that we can be the adults in the room".

The vote for House speaker is on January 3, 2019, and Pelosi will need to win a majority of the full House if all members vote to reclaim the speakership.

"(White House) spin growing increasingly desperate and erratic", he wrote.

"(Senate Minority Leader) Chuck Schumer voted for border security in 2006.

Democrats, meanwhile, blamed Trump for "plunging the country into chaos" and noted that, weeks ago, Trump said he would be "proud" to "own" a shutdown over border wall funding.

Incoming acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney complained that Democrats were ignoring an offer from the White House to agree to lower funding levels compared to Trump's initial goal of $5 billion to build the wall. Mostly, the Democratic aides declined to take the blame-game bait being dangled by the White House.
