Real Madrid claim third straight Club World Cup title

Real Madrid claim third straight Club World Cup title

Real Madrid were crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions for a third straight year after defeating Al Ain 4-1 in the final on Saturday night. If they win, Real would become the first club to win four Club World Cup championships.

Real boss Santiago Solari, who has had to deal with rumours surrounding his future after former Los Blancos coach Jose Mourinho's sacking by Manchester United earlier this week, named a strong side including Modric, Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale.

Luka Modric opened the scoring in the 14th minute, the 2018 Ballon d'Or victor curling a delightful shot past goalkeeper Khalid Eisa.

After River Plate was upset by the host club, everyone knew it would be Real Madrid lifting the trophy once again.

Team Wellington were no doubt wondering what might have been yesterday as Al Ain, the team they nearly beat 10 days ago, contested the Club World Cup final against Real Madrid.

"It's the fourth game we've played in only a few days and it has taken its toll on us, but we have had a great tournament".

"Congratulations to Real Madrid".

Al Ain's route to the final was more eventful, with wins over Oceania champion Team Wellington in the first stage, Africa champion Esperance of Tunis in the second stage and South American champion River Plate in the final.

Early pressure from Solari's men saw the ball deflect off an Al Ain post after Llorente sent a cross towards Lucas Vazquez, and Marcelo then drove a shot off-target.

Al Ain did pull one back with 5 minutes to go through Tsukasa Shiotani, before putting one through their own net in the first minute of stoppage time.

Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, Real Madrid endured bit of slump in form as they had a rocky start to the season.

Japanese midfielder Shiotani glanced in a Caio free-kick to grab Al-Ain an 86th-minute consolation, but Nader deflected Junior Vinicius' effort past Eisa in the first minute of added time.
