Putin: West disrespecting voters' choices of Trump and Brexit

Putin: West disrespecting voters' choices of Trump and Brexit

Russian President Vladimir Putin (right) looks over toward US President Donald Trump, as Trump speaks during their joint news conference in Helsinki, Finland, July 16, 2018. Though Putin seemed bored at times when reciting domestic statistics on agriculture production, he livened up whenever talk of nuclear war came his way.

Putin also said sanctions imposed by Western countries on Russian Federation were the result of the country's increasing global influence.

All the speculation about Russia's supposed aspirations for the world dominance are nothing but a "mentality imposed by some to achieve internal goals", the president said.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday he wants to withdraw from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty because Russian Federation has violated the agreement. "Are you no longer afraid?"

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a chilling warning Thursday about the rising threat of a nuclear war, saying "it could lead to the destruction of civilization as a whole and maybe even our planet" - and putting the blame squarely on the United States. It has accused the United States of inventing a false pretext to exit a treaty it wants to leave anyway so as to develop new missiles.

"We have to ensure we are safe and then they would be complaining that we have and advantage".

According to Russian television network RT, Ryabkov said, "Washington publicly announced its plans to withdraw from the treaty (INF) already in October". He said that if the US puts intermediate-range missiles in Europe, Russia will be forced to take countermeasures.

"We are witnessing the breakup of the arms control system", he said.

Putin also lamented the lack of negotiations on extending the New START Treaty, which expires in 2021, and again warned that Russian Federation will do whatever is needed to ensure its national security in the face of future American nuclear developments - specifically singling out calls for tactical nuclear weapons and non-nuclear ballistic missiles.

He also noted that Western analysts are talking about the possibility of using low-yield nuclear weapons.

"I belive humanity will have the necessary common sense and the desire to survive in order not to lead to extremities". As Putin was speaking, Trump tweeted that Russia was among those countries that are "not happy about the US leaving" because they will have to fight Islamic State alone, but the Russian president didn't address that.

The Russian president noted that the nation's hard currency reserves have increased from $432 billion at the start of the year to $464 billion now.

"The U.S. base on Okinawa has been there for decades now".

Putin noted that it would be proper for the U.S.to leave Syria since it is there illegally, without invitation from the Syrian government in Damascus - as Russian Federation was - nor authorization from the United Nations Security Council. He added that he broadly agreed with Trump's view that Islamic State has been defeated in Syria.

As Russia has become increasingly centralised under Putin, questions at the conference have begun to resemble lobbying attempts to resolve specific problems, from fixing roads to freeing political prisoners.

Putin won his latest term in power with 76.69 percent of the vote in March following an election which the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe said lacked "real choice".

With relations between Moscow and Washington strained by everything from Ukraine to hacking allegations, Putin said he did not know when a meeting with Trump might take place however. "We've taken back the land".
