Corbyn denies calling May 'stupid woman'

Corbyn denies calling May 'stupid woman'

Theresa May had been leading her MPs in a call-and-response routine over Mr Corbyn's shifting position on calling a no-confidence vote, shouting "Oh, yes he did", to a chorus of "oh no, he didn't".

A few hours later, after consulting what he called "lip speakers" Bercow told MPs that nobody could know for sure what Corbyn said and his denial must be accepted.

Tory deputy chair James Cleverly tweeted condemnation of Corbyn's "misogynistic language", but it was pointed out that Philip Hammond was recently caught calling a female MP a "stupid woman".

The Labour leader said he had actually muttered "stupid people" during heated exchanges with the PM on Wednesday.

She added: "I would appeal to Jeremy Corbyn over the Christmas break to reflect, yes on the views of his own party and many of his MPs, and above all else in the interests of people the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and come back in the new year supporting an European Union referendum so that people across the United Kingdom can get the opportunity at long last to reverse Brexit and find a way out of this sorry mess".

Mr Corbyn's claim "most of our media" didn't report the death of the homeless man accompanied headlines of the "stupid woman" row as featured in The Times, the Daily Mail and the Independent website.

The angry scenes will do little to help the prime minister secure the cross-party agreement she wants for her deal with Brussels, although she won support from politicians on her own side who are usually among her fiercest Brexit critics.

The alleged remarks came after the Prime Minister said the Labour Party "aren't impressed" with their leader's stance on Brexit.

But that didn't stop Tory MPs demanding an apology.

The Conservatives are unhappy with what they view as Bercow's pro-Labour bias, despite the fact he stood as a Tory member of Parliament, and he has had a long-running feud with Leadsom. Did I say "stupid people"?

Ms Sturgeon said if the motion passed it would bring about Labour's desire for a general election, while defeat would "force Jeremy Corbyn to take a decision" on a second referendum. Bercow reacted with barely contained anger, wagging his finger at Ford and denying the allegation against him.
