Theresa May postpones Brexit deal vote

Theresa May postpones Brexit deal vote

To the east of the city the "People's Vote" group held a rally calling for a second referendum.

But it could also lead to scenarios under which the country remains close to - or even stays in - the EU.

MPs could now have to wait until January 21, 2019 to vote on the government's beleaguered deal, May announced in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon.

Before that call, a cabinet source said they believed ministers would back the decision to delay the vote, but added: "She needs to have a bloody good plan B".

An unscheduled statement from new Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay was also to be rushed into the House of Commons, entitled "EU Exit - Article 50" - but the substance of his statement was not immediately clear.

The main sticking point is a "backstop" provision that aims to guarantee an open border between European Union member Ireland and the UK's Northern Ireland post-Brexit.

Among the problems with the deal mentioned in the summary of the report are the backstop - the mechanism created to ensure there is no return to a hard border between British-ruled Northern Ireland and EU-member Ireland, which is the part of the deal that has been severely criticized by lawmakers.

"I've been speaking to factory workers in Scotland, farmers in Wales and people right across the country, answering their questions about the deal and our future", she said.

Pound hits 20-month low after Britain's May aborts Brexit vote

"We have known for at least two weeks that Theresa May's worst-of-all-worlds deal was going to be rejected by parliament because it is damaging for Britain".

May accepted there was intense concern among MPs about the Northern Irish "backstop", a policy aimed at avoiding a return to border checks between the British province and Ireland. She spoke with presidents Donald Tusk, Jean-Claude Juncker, she spoke with Leo Varadkar, she spoke with Angela Merkel and she spoke with Mark Rutte. But EU leaders have insisted the divorce agreement is final and not renegotiable.

May has repeatedly said the government will not seek to delay or reverse Brexit.

Eurosceptics in May's Conservative party and the Northern Irish party that props up her government hate the provision in the Brexit deal created to keep open the border with Ireland - the so-called backstop. Six percent said they were unsure and one percent refused to give any opinion.

The move thrusts Britain's exit from the European Union into further confusion, with possible options including a disorderly no-deal Brexit, another referendum on EU membership, or a last minute renegotiation of May's deal with Brussels.

On Thursday, ITV had joined the BBC in cancelling plans to broadcast a televised Brexit debate between the prime minister and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, after Labour and the Conservatives failed to agree which of the rival offers to accept.

Mrs May has said no, Labour says yes but only if it does not get a general election.

"The United Kingdom is free to revoke unilaterally the notification of its intention to withdraw from the European Union", the court said, in a ruling which can not be appealed.
