Conservative Lawmakers Begin Theresa May Confidence Vote

Conservative Lawmakers Begin Theresa May Confidence Vote

Members of Parliament voted 200 to 117 by secret ballot to support May, who told them ahead of the vote that she will not lead the party into the next election, expected in 2022.

Brady told the BBC he had spoken to the prime minister and noted she was "keen that matters be resolved as quickly as is reasonably possible". "I stand ready to finish the job".

Earlier, the European Court of Justice gave hope to a small but growing number of MPs seeking a second referendum on Brexit, ruling that Britain was free to halt withdrawal from the bloc unilaterally. That brings back control of our money, our borders, and our laws.

The delay also prompted outrage among lawmakers, with one leading Conservative rebel, Brexit-supporter Mark Francois, accusing the government of having "hidden in the toilets".

May could face a further no-confidence motion from opposition parties if she survives Wednesday's vote.

Mordaunt is one of the last remaining pro-Brexit members of May's cabinet, where she serves as global development minister.

Downing Street described talks with Mr Rutte as "constructive" and said the leaders agreed "to work together to find a way through", while in Berlin Mrs May and Mrs Merkel agreed to "keep in close touch on this in order to get the deal over the line". Her deal was due to be voted on by Parliament Tuesday, but May canceled the vote after it became clear the blueprint would be voted down.

During the day, more than 150 party MPs expressed support for May, insisting that the United Kingdom didn't need such a distraction with the date of Brexit drawing near.

European Union leaders have repeatedly warned they have no appetite to reopen a divorce deal forged through lengthy tortuous talks.

If the Brexit agreement is accepted by the U.K. Parliament, it must still be endorsed by the European Parliament before March 29.

"We have a common determination to do everything to be not in the situation one day to use that backstop, but we have to prepare", Juncker said. "As time is running out, we will also discuss our preparedness for a no-deal scenario". It comes days after May postponed a vote to approve the divorce deal to avoid all-but-certain defeat. "If much more than 100 MPs vote against her then I think she is going to be struggling to remain for very long and would find it hard to get that deal through the House of Commons".

Former U.K.Environment Secretary Owen Paterson accused May of acting like a "supplicant" in dealings with the EU.

But she told Parliament on Monday "there will be no enduring and successful Brexit without some compromise on both sides of the debate".

May remains prime minister and party leader until a replacement is chosen.

British business figures expressed alarm at the prospect of even more political uncertainty.

MP Graham Brady says the threshold of 48 letters from lawmakers needed to trigger a leadership vote has been reached.

The Conservatives' mechanism for initiating leadership elections is triggered if 15 percent of MPs write a letter to a group called the 1922 Committee, indicating they have no confidence in the leader.

She warned that a change of leadership at such a sensitive time in the Brexit process "would put our country's future at risk" and explained that any new leader would not have time to push through the required Brexit legislation by the end of March.

With this victory, May's leadership can not be challenged again for a year. "The question is how", tweeted EU Council President Donald Tusk, referring to the 27-member countries that will remain in the EU after Britain leaves.

European Union leaders tried to stay out of the fray.

A disorderly Brexit undermines the cohesion of the European Union, which was set up to create prosperity and ensure peace after two world wars.
