Trump chooses army general to lead Joint Chiefs of Staff

Trump chooses army general to lead Joint Chiefs of Staff

The officials confirmed the decision Friday on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced.

Mattis and Dunford are expected to attend the Army-Navy game on Saturday along with Trump.

Mr. Trump re-nominated him in 2017 for a second term.

Investigators working with special counsel Robert Mueller have grilled White House chief of staff John Kelly as part of their investigation into whether President Donald Trump has been attempting to obstruct justice, according to a new report from CNN.

Trump's decision, announced before leaving Washington for the annual Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia, had caught some in the Pentagon by surprise when unofficial word spread Friday after he had tweeted that a succession announcement was coming.

The date of transition has yet to be determined.

Dunford originally was nominated for the Joint Chiefs position by former President Barack Obama, serving an initial two-year term.

If chosen, Milley would succeed the current chairman, Gen. Joseph Dunford, whose term expires later next year.

Milley who holds degrees from Princeton University and Columbia University, is known to be liked by Trump.

In his more than 35 years in the military, Milley has commanded units with the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne and served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The chairman is the highest-ranking officer in the US military and is the top military adviser to the president.

He has long predicted fundamental changes in the "character of ground warfare" that would place American troops against adversaries with similar technology and weaponry, increasing the need for long-range weapons that can take out defense systems, artillery or ships. He helped the service form its first new major command in some four decades - the four-star Army Futures Command stood up in Austin, Texas in the summer to focus on modernizing the service's warfighting equipment. The service so far has built two of six planned brigades.
