White officer charged with murder in death of black neighbour

White officer charged with murder in death of black neighbour

- A Dallas County grand jury indicted former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger for murder on Friday in the fatal shooting of Botham Jean.

Guyger was charged with manslaughter three days after 26-year-old Jean's death.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Jean's mother and sister took the stand before the grand jury this week, but little else is known about what evidence was presented.

The former police officer shot Jean on the night of September 6 when she returned to her home after ending her shift, according to investigators.

Questions surrounding the case have caused global attention, with a focus on whether Guyger knew she was entering the wrong unit, and if she was justified in using deadly force as a police officer, given that Jean was in his own apartment.

Guyger lived in Apartment 1378 of the South Side Flats complex close to Dallas Police headquarters, according to Guyger's arrest warrant affidavit, as cited by Dallas Observer. She said she got to what she thought was her apartment - Jean's was directly above hers - and found the door ajar.

She opened it to find a figure standing in the darkness and said she pulled her gun and fired twice after the person ignored her commands. After wrapping up a shift on September 6, Guyger went home - to the wrong home - and killed Jean.

Jean's family filed a lawsuit against the City of Dallas and its police department in late October.

Guyger posted a $300,000 bond and will await her trial outside of prison.

She also added that the department has "developed a framework for policy change" by restructuring the Citizen Review Board, revamping implicit bias training and seeking input from employee advisory and community advisory boards.

Defense attorney and former Dallas County prosecutor Pete Schulte told the Observer earlier this week that the grand jury was more likely to indict Guyger for murder than manslaughter, if it indicted her at all, because she meant to shoot Jean.

She said she couldn't discuss the evidence presented to the grand jury, but previously explained it was the Texas Rangers who pursued the manslaughter charge.

Johnson, who was voted out of office in the November 6 election, will not see the case through to a trial and said Friday that she "trusts the DA-elect will continue to represent this family (and all of Dallas County) as he seeks justice for victims".

Jean's father, Bertram, said, "We are hurting deeply, but we take some comfort at this time with the decision that the grand jury reached". "The Jean family's loss can not be restored to them, but we will continue to work to ensure that police officers are held to the same standards as everyone else in the Dallas community and across the state of Texas".

Botham's mother Allison said, "They have been quite thorough in their investigation".

Jean was a native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

Lee Merritt, one of the attorneys for Jean's family, cast doubt on Guyger's narrative. He had worked for the PricewaterhouseCoopers accounting firm in Dallas since graduating. Her apartment is on the third floor, directly below Jean's residence.
