No Hard Evidence Saudi Prince Ordered Khashoggi Killing: Pompeo

No Hard Evidence Saudi Prince Ordered Khashoggi Killing: Pompeo

The sanctions, which freezes their assets and bars their travel to Canada, "target individuals who are, in the opinion of the government of Canada, responsible for or complicit in the extrajudicial killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on October 2, 2018", Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement. USA intelligence officials have concluded that the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, must have at least known of the plot, but Trump has equivocated over who was to blame.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY'-oh) is defending the USA role in Yemen in excerpts of prepared remarks he's expected to deliver to members of the Senate.

US Senator Elizabeth Warren is demanding that US lobbying firms employed by Saudi Arabia detail the scope of their work and explain whether their business dealings with Riyadh reflect American values, letters published by the lawmaker showed on Thursday.

Mr Pompeo was due to speak to the Senate alongside Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to discuss USA support for the Saudi-led coalition that is fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels, ahead of a possible vote on reducing military backing to the Saudis.

Much will depend on what senators hear from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Argentine legal authorities took initial action Wednesday to consider a request from Human Rights Watch to prosecute Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for alleged crimes against humanity. It would be largely a symbolic move, however, as House Republican leaders have given no indication they would take up the war powers measure before the end of the year - the end of the current Congress.

Menendez speculated that Haspel didn't attend because she "would have said with a high degree of confidence that the crown prince of Saudi Arabia was involved in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called the briefing "inadequate", adding that he will not be a reliable Republican vote on any key legislation until the Central Intelligence Agency briefs the members. Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the trilateral meeting with PM Modi will be held towards the end of the Trump-Abe talks which is part of the series of the meetings the US President will hold during the two days.

He said CIA had already briefed the Senate intelligence committee and Senate leaders and "will continue to provide updates on this important matter to policymakers and Congress". "Having said that, the way the administration has handled the Saudi Arabia is just not acceptable".

Pompeo says USA involvement in the conflict is central to the Trump administration's broader goal of containing Iranian influence in the Middle East.

Those denials have been echoed by US President Donald Trump, who last week pledged to stand by MBS and his father, Saudi King Salman, despite the killing.
