Merkel set for late G20 arrival after 'serious' plane malfunction

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government aircraft made an emergency landing on the way to the G20 summit, forcing the leader to board a commercial flight to finish the journey.

He also said that the back of the Buenos Aires government delegation will take another plane, the air force of Germany.

The aircraft lost communications for almost an hour, forcing it to make an emergency landing in Germany's Cologne-Bonn airport.

Angela Merkel is now travelling to the G20 summit aboard Iberia flight 6849, an Airbus A330 on a scheduled commercial flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires.

"I'm glad we had the most experienced captain of the German Air Force in command", she said.

Air force Col. Guido Henrich said the problem was caused by the failure of an electrical distributor box, which affected the radio system and also a fuel system, meaning that the plane couldn't dump fuel.

Named Konrad Adenauer after Germany's first post-war chancellor, the Airbus A340-300 was met on the tarmac by fire engines, news agency DPA said.

Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen was informed about the incident immediately, and tried for hours to organise an alternate aircraft to carry Merkel and her entourage.

Later, the delegation travelled by bus to a hotel in Bonn. Later, they boarded another plane to Madrid.

Merkel's delayed arrival has thrown her schedule into disarray, and DPA reported she was to miss the traditional G20 "family photo" of attending heads of state and government.

Earlier, The Indian Express reported that India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi Vladimir Putin and Chinese premier Xi Jinping for a trilateral meeting aimed at addressing various areas of cooperation among the three nations.
