Martial law in Ukraine: Putin warns against ‘reckless’ moves

Martial law in Ukraine: Putin warns against ‘reckless’ moves

Moscow has accused Kiev of planning Sunday's confrontation as a provocation aimed at drumming up support for Poroshenko ahead of elections next year and convincing Western governments to impose further sanctions on Russian Federation.

The war of words between Ukraine and Russian Federation has been escalating since the accident in the Kerch Strait with the sides accusing each other of provocations.

"We don't have any other information from [U.S. officials]", he said when asked about Trump's comments.

He said current president Petro Poroshenko needed to do something to improve his approval ratings.

The Ukrainian navy says Russian ships fired on and seized three of its artillery ships Sunday as they were sailing from Black Sea port city of Odessa to Mariupol on the Sea of Azov. Over the last year, the two countries have levied a series of tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of imports from one another, with the latest round of USA duties set to go into force in the new year.

The Ukrainian vessels - a tug and two gunboats - were trying to pass through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, but were refused access and chased into worldwide waters by 10 Russian vessels.

Russia's Defense Ministry has said it will deploy new S-400 surface-to-air missile systems on the Crimean peninsula as tensions flared in the region this week following Moscow's claims that three Ukrainian vessels had violated its territorial waters near the Kerch strait.

The episode has raised fears in the West of a wider conflict between the two countries and Kiev has since introduced martial law in parts of the country, saying it fears a possible Russian invasion. The fracture in the Western alliance sets the stage for tense exchanges when European, US, and Russian leaders meet at a G20 summit in Argentina later this week.

"That will be very determinative", Trump told the Post.

"Maybe I won't have the meeting", he said.

They captured 24 Ukrainian sailors, three of whom are in the hospital and 12 of whom are sitting in pre-trial detention.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday the Trump is receiving "regular briefings on the Russia/Ukraine situation from his national security team".

Austria, which now holds the rotating European Union presidency, has said the bloc will consider further sanctions against the Kremlin at an upcoming meeting.

"I am getting a report on that tonight and that will determine what happens at the meeting", Trump said.

Meanwhile, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert urged European states to do more to support Ukraine and said Washington wants to see tougher enforcement of sanctions against Russian Federation.
