President Trump aims tweet at migrant caravans as holiday break ends

President Trump aims tweet at migrant caravans as holiday break ends

Earlier in the day, the Washington Post reported that the Mexican authorities had agreed to Trump administration's "Remain in Mexico" proposal.

"We will get work here", she said.

Trump's statement led many to believe that the United States had reached an informal deal with Mexico regarding refugee processing. "No "Releasing" into the US", Trump said in a tweet late Saturday. She told Reuters that Obrador's administration was "in talks" with the US, but stressed they could not make any agreements since they weren't yet in government.

Ms Sanchez Cordero ruled out that Mexico would be declared a "safe third country" for asylum claimants.

The Washington Post reported Saturday that Washington had won the support of the government of Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - who takes office on December 1 - for a plan mandating that asylum seekers at the border remain in Mexico as their claims move through the US immigration system.

All US-Mexico border traffic has been halted at the busy crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, the US Customs and Border Protection agency has said.

Mexico's incoming deputy interior minister Zoe Robledo said details of the "Remain in Mexico" scheme were still being worked out.

The administration of Mexico's current president, Enrique Pena Nieto, rejected a similar Trump administration proposal past year.

Thousands of Central Americans who have trekked through Mexico arrived in recent days to the border town of Tijuana, hoping to cross into the US.

Others, he said, would "stay in Mexico", he added, without elaboration.

Those people would be required to wait until their claims move through USA courts before crossing the border. Many hope to apply for asylum in the US, but agents at the San Ysidro entry point are processing fewer than 100 asylum petitions a day.

During his Thanksgiving break, Mr Trump also threatened to close entry into the country from the southern border.

More than 4,000 migrants are already in Tijuana on the Mexican side of the border, with more on the way in caravans.

Central American migrants, mostly men, appear to be trying to breach the border crossing between Tijuana and California.

Although the press, and in particular CNN, wish to treat this as a concotion of the administration, it seems the thousands of hopeful immigrants in the caravans, and the organizations supporting them, also take the situation very seriously and are taking action on that seriousness.

No information was available on whether the woman was planning to claim asylum in the US.
