Black Friday shooting leaves one dead and two injured in Alabama

Black Friday shooting leaves one dead and two injured in Alabama

It started with two men (one 21, the other 18) having an argument in the Riverside Galleria, a mall in the suburb of Hoover, just outside Birmingham. During the fight, one of the men produced a handgun and shot the other, an 18-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama, hitting him twice in the torso. Obviously, the mall was packed with people doing their early Black Friday shopping, and chaos erupted when the shots were fired.

A 12-year-old girl was also wounded - although it is not clear if she was shot by the gunman or caught in the crossfire with police.

The second teenager was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Alabama's biggest mall is closed until further notice after a shooting that left two people injured and the suspect dead.

Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis said it was a sad day in Hoover, but he's very proud of the Hoover police officers who were on the scene.

The city followed up with a tweet at 12:09 a.m.to thank the police officers and paramedics who responded to the scene, saying, "Our HPD officers acted heroically and professionally tonight".

Two individuals got into a physical altercation near the Foot Action store inside the Galleria, Rector said.

Derzis said once the Hoover Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office complete their investigation, the mall will be turned back over to the control of mall management. "You don't bring guns into a crowded mall".

Thursday wasn't the first time the Galleria has dealt with chaotic disturbances during busy shopping hours.

Reports of gunshots quickly spread, but they were deemed false and no one was shot.
