Salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey in 35 states

Salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey in 35 states

The CDC is recommending that consumers throw out any romaine lettuce in their homes, and avoid eating romaine at restaurants. One suffered from hemolytic-uremic syndrome, a severe complication that can result from an E. coli infection. If you have eaten romaine lettuce in the past week and have been ill with similar symptoms, see your doctor.

Epidemiologic evidence from the United States and Canada indicates that romaine lettuce is a likely source of the outbreak. No deaths have been reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it is working with officials in Canada on the outbreak, which has sickened 32 people in 11 states and 18 people in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Caesar salads may be few and far between this week as romaine lettuce has been pulled from grocery shelves across Saskatchewan.

The Centers for Disease Control is advising consumers, restaurants, and retailers not to eat, serve, or sell any romaine lettuce as it investigates an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to romaine. In addition, there were a large number of potential suppliers that provided lettuce to processing plants, which mixes lettuces from many different farms and areas. Six individuals have been hospitalized after becoming sick. The CDC announced that the outbreak appeared to be over on June 28. That raises the amount of recalled turkey to more than 147,000 pounds, from 91,000 pounds, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Inspection Service (FSIS) told CBS MoneyWatch.

The AVA said on Wednesday that no specific brand of lettuce or farm have been identified by U.S. authorities in relation to the outbreak.

Johnson says that unlike lettuce that is grown outdoors in massive fields in Arizona and California, their crops are grown hydroponically - under glass and in pools of irrigation water which they sterilize with ultra violet (UV) light.

O'Malley says this is the sixth E. coli outbreak this year that has caused her business to surge, in some cases by more than 50 percent.

Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, says Dr. Oz - although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption.
