Pakistan play steadily in first Test against New Zealand

In a low-scoring game, such as this one, a tight finish is always on the card and New Zealand have as much a chance to strike first as have Pakistan to go one up in the series.

Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali both recorded five-wicket hauls to put Pakistan on course for victory in the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. But as they returned to the pavilion, rest of New Zealand's batting lineup stumbled quickly.

The side require 139 runs to win with 10 wickets in hand.

Patel's figures were the second best for a New Zealand spinner on debut.

Pakistan were just four runs away from victory when their last man standing, Azhar Ali, failed to take the team to the other side and fell lbw. Courtesy Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali, the team comfortably cruised to 130 for three at the stroke of lunch which also witnessed the dismissal of the former.

Almost £800k was matched on Pakistan at [1.01] before New Zealand mounted a remarkable fight-back to win the first Test in Dubai by four runs.

At stumps on day three, Pakistan was on 37 for 0 with Imam Ul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez at the crease on 25 and 8 runs respectively.

"The wicket was challenging and both teams had to fight hard, and certainly Pakistan had the upper-hand, but some of the characteristics we held very dear is the attitude to fight on".

For Pakistan, Yasir Shah was the pick of the bowlers as he got three wickets. Eventually, Ali was the final wicket to fall, as New Zealand sealed a famous win and provided one of the most nail-biting betting events in recent memory.

The 30 year old debutant took 5 wickets for 59 runs to help the Black Caps to their closest ever win in Tests.

"It's very disappointing to lose it", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said.

"We kind of wanted to play that long game and stay in the game as long as possible and that only happens from one ball at a time".

The result leaves Pakistan determined to get their revenge when they second Test starts on Saturday.
