White House again threatens Acosta’s pass; CNN seeks hearing

White House again threatens Acosta’s pass; CNN seeks hearing

In a decision that sends a strong message to the Trump administration about freedom of the press, a USA federal judge on Friday granted CNN's request to reinstate its reporter's White House press pass.

CNN issued a statement accusing the White House of "continuing to violate the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution", reports Axios.

In a statement shared through Stelter, CNN said suspending Acosta threatens "all journalists and news organizations".

The White House said Acosta would continue to hold his credentials while the 14-day judge's order was in effect.

"Today, the court made clear that there is no absolute First Amendment right to access the White House", said Sanders.

But on Sunday night, CNN's Brian Stelter of "Reliable Sources" said in his newsletter that "White House officials sent Acosta a letter stating that his pass is set to be suspended again once the restraining order expires".

Late Friday, top officials named as defendants in the suit from CNN and Acosta suggested that the "preliminary" decision to revoke Acosta's pass earlier this month could be final if he doesn't submit materials to argue his case by November 18, for a final decision November 19.

The White House letter, seeking to address the question of due process, said Acosta "violated basic standards" of news events when he got into a heated exchange with President Donald Trump on November 7.

According to the Daily Beast, the White House justified the suspension by claiming Acosta placed "his hands" on an intern who attempted to take the microphone from Acosta while he addressed several questions to the president. The White House lawyers failed to convince the judge that they had "broad discretion to regulate" which journalists had access to a press pass.

In an interview that aired Sunday, President Trump told Fox News host Chris Wallace that Kelly's ruling was not a "big deal" and warned Acosta's pass would be revoked if he "misbehaves" once more.

Members of the press have had an assigned workspace at the White House since 1902. He continued, "And if they don't listen to the rules and regulations, we'll end up back in court and we'll win. You are a rude, bad person", Trump told Acosta.

Mr. Acosta replied through his lawyers Sunday, objecting to the White House writing rules now, and then attempting to retroactively apply them to the reporter's behavior during a November 7 press conference.
