Homeowners - famous and not - await word of wildfire's toll

Homeowners - famous and not - await word of wildfire's toll

The Camp Fire has destroyed 6,453 homes and 260 commercial buildings in the area around Paradise, making it the most destructive to buildings in state history, surpassing the Tubbs Fire, which destroyed 5,636 structures in Napa and Sonoma counties past year.

President Donald Trump said Saturday via Twiitter that "there is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly fires in California".

The first fire started Thursday near Townsend oaks 40 miles (64 km) Northwest of Los Angeles.

Fire officials said three firefighters and some civilians were hurt, but details about their injuries were unknown.

In General, in the state of raging three major fires.

Fanned by strong winds, it has scorched 70,000 acres (28,300 hectares) and has not been contained, the California Fire Department (Cal Fire) said.

The Ventura blazes erupted days after a gunman opened fire in a crowded country music bar in the county, killing 12. Many cities in the greater Los Angeles area have been evacuated, including Calabasas, Topanga Canyon, and Malibu.

The death toll in the Camp Fire in Northern California has risen to 23 with the discovery Saturday of 14 more sets of remains, Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea told reporters.

In the south, flames leapt and raged from Thousand Oaks south through the northwestern San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and appeared headed inexorably towards the Pacific Ocean. These fires have also caused wide-spread destruction to homes and establishments, including Caitlyn Jenner's home in Malibu and the Paramount Ranch, and are now not contained.

"I just can't think about it", she said, beginning to cry.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Chief John Benedict said the charred remains of two people were found in a auto in Malibu, but homicide investigators were still working the case.

Chico police officer John Barker and his partner evacuated several elderly people from an apartment complex. They said the five could not immediately be identified because of the burns they suffered.

The mayor of Paradise said that only 10 to 20 percent of homes in the town were left standing.

She, her husband and six others rode out the fire in a tunnel a short distance up the road as the fire burned the hillsides above and all around them.

Two people were arrested in looting incidents Friday during the evacuations, according to Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow. Authorities said investigators believed the driver became disoriented and the auto was overcome by fire.

"There are times when you have such rapid-moving fires ... no amount of planning is going to result in a ideal scenario, and that's what we had to deal with here", Mr Honea told the Action News Network.

Venture County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen hadn't heard about the Edison report. But thousands remained under evacuation orders due to the Woolsey fire.

Spot fires continued to occur late Sunday afternoon near the Malibu campus of Pepperdine University, where 3,500 students were sheltering in place.

Evacuees trapped in traffic abandoned their cars and ran with their children in tow as the Camp Fire quickly closed in in Northern California's Butte County. The university said it was closing Malibu campus and its Calabasas campus to the north until November 26 but classes would be remotely administered online and through email.
