California wildfires: At least 42 killed in deadly blaze

The death toll in Northern California wildfires jumped up to at least 42 people, the Butte County Sheriff said, according to Reuters.

Lisa Jordan drove 600 miles from Yakima, Washington, to search for her uncle, Nick Clark, and his wife, Anne, who lived in Paradise. Anne Clark suffers from multiple sclerosis and is unable to walk.

"We just don't know what happened", she said in an interview from her home in Lewisporte in central Newfoundland, adding that calls to local shelters and hospitals have also yielded no information about the fate of the couple in their late 60s.

"I'm staying hopeful", she said.

"While fire fighters and civilians are still in harm's way, the president even suggested cutting off necessary funding to keep Americans safe".

On Monday, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said they have 13 coroner agencies helping search for human remains as well as three anthropology search teams. Officials were unsure of the exact number of missing. "We will rebuild our homes, we will rebuild our town stronger, better, safer and more handsome than ever".

"I love animals, but more I hate the feeling of hopelessness and helplessness". No cars in the driveway was a considered a good sign, one auto a little more ominous and multiple burned-out vehicles more reason for worry.

The state's 40-million-strong population also helps explain the fires' deadliness.

Firefighters battle the Peak Fire in Simi Valley, California, US, Nov 12, 2018. PG&E had no comment on the email.

She said she wasn't leaving, because God would save her, Carlson recalled.

Abandoned, charred vehicles clutter the main streets of Paradise, evidence of the panicked evacuation that took place on Thursday as the flames chased some 50,000 people out of the area.

Speaking with CBS Sacramento, the family said they had lost everything in the blaze but were thankful they made it out alive. Still, the Fresno, California, resident wasn't planning on heading to the fire area.

Almost 9,000 firefighters have been battling the wildfires.

"You can see a peek of sun here and there - it's not going to completely block out the sun or anything", National Weather Service meteorologist Sara Pampreen said.

The blaze was part of an outbreak of wildfires on both ends of the state. Together, they were blamed for 44 deaths, including two in celebrity-studded Malibu in Southern California, where firefighters appeared to be gaining ground against a roughly 143-square-mile blaze that destroyed at least 370 structures, with hundreds more feared lost. The disaster, which started on Thursday and quickly spread across the state, has already destroyed about 7,000 buildings and devastated more than 42,000 hectares of the state's territory. Brown, who has declared a state emergency, said California is requesting aid from the Trump administration.
