Timberwolves' winless road trip reportedly spurred Jimmy Butler trade

Timberwolves' winless road trip reportedly spurred Jimmy Butler trade

The full deal - which is scheduled to be filed with the league on Monday - sends Butler and Justin Patton to Philadelphia for Robert Covington, Dario Saric, Jarryd Bayless and a 2022 second-round draft pick.

After news of the trade broke, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz took to Twitter to welcome Jimmy Butler to "the best sports city in America".

So far this season, Simmons' vast passing ability has meant that he has been Philadelphia's lead ball handler - even with Markelle Fultz in the starting lineup - but the addition of Butler will mean that the Australian will have to cede some of his ballhandling duties to make the fit work.

The Clippers stayed in conversation with the Thibodeau and the rest of Minnesota's front office seemingly until the end, as numerous reports from both Wojnarowski and Charania, as well as others, included them in the group of interested teams.

He has since played in 10 games, averaging just over 21 points, but has cut an unhappy figure in the Wolves 4-9 start to the 2018-2019 campaign.

Butler, 29, is now in his eighth National Basketball Association season. There are also concerns, though they clearly didn't put off Philadelphia.

The 76ers also needed to find another superstar to help the team overcome Aron Baynes' Boston Celtics, who sit in fifth place in the East but proved too strong for Rookie of the Year, Australia's Simmons, and All-Star centre Joel Embiid, in last year's playoffs.

The Timberwolves and 76ers play twice this season: January 15 in Philadelphia and March 30 in Minnesota. He's a career 16.5 point-per-game scorer, though that is skewed by his first two seasons that were very meager on the scoring front.
