Trump threatens to shoot migrants who throw stones near border

The caravan, once estimated at more than 7,000 people, is now down to about 3,500 asylum-seekers and other migrants and is still hundreds of miles from the border.

The Immigration and Nationality Act states: "Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in global or United States waters), irrespective of such alien's status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 235 (b)".

The commander-in-chief gave troops headed to the U.S. -Mexico border a confusing message on Thursday when he said during a press conference that if migrants throw rocks at them, they should consider it a weapon.

His comments were the latest twist in a story that has pushed the Pentagon unhappily into the political space, prompting questions about whether Defence Secretary Jim Mattis was allowing the military to be leveraged as a political stunt.

Trump was asked whether he could see the armed active-duty military personnel on the border firing at anyone if a similar situation occurred in the U.S. The Border Patrol puts them in the system and releases them into the US, with the promise that the migrants will appear at a hearing - which is often two years or more later.

Reported by the Wall Street Journal, a total of 5,000 troops will be deployed to the southwest border by the US military. An official says there are about 2,600 USA troops now at staging bases, largely in Texas, with several thousand more expected to flow in through the weekend and move into California and Arizona.

The United State is deploying more than 5,000 active-duty troops at the border, in addition to more than 2,000 National Guard troops already in place, to assist Border Patrol agents in processing members of the caravan.

The number of migrants will decline once the new rules are established, he said.

Donald Trump on Tuesday morning continued to engage in irresponsible and incendiary fearmongering regarding the migrant caravans in Mexico despite Saturday's rampage at the Tree of Life Synagogue and notable bipartisan criticism.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, says an obstacle to keeping that promise is the plan to erect "tent cities" for asylum seekers. "Under this plan, the illegal aliens will no longer get a free pass into our country by lodging meritless claims in seeking asylum".

Trump's presidential campaign in 2016 concentrated on border fears, and that's his final-week focus in the midterm fight.

TRUMP: "Asylum is not a program for those living in poverty." - speech Thursday.

A federal official who was not authorized to be quoted by name said 153 migrants in the second caravan were detained Wednesday during highway inspections in the southern state of Chiapas, a short distance from the Guatemalan border.

Of the caravan he said: 'Nobody's coming in.

In the past, the practice of metering has resulted in individuals deciding not to endure a lengthy wait to try to get into the country legally and instead to cross illegally.

But federal police began pulling freight trucks over and forcing migrants off, saying their habit of clinging to the tops or sides of the trucks was risky. He made his comments at the White House in a speech that was billed as a response to groups of migrants now walking toward the US border.
