From Aadhaar to CBI, Mapping Modi Govt’s ‘Don’t Care’ Attitude

From Aadhaar to CBI, Mapping Modi Govt’s ‘Don’t Care’ Attitude

Further, Section 4B of the DSPE Act specifies a two-year tenure for the CBI director, and also notes that a CBI director can not be transferred without the prior consent of the appointing committee.

The Supreme Court Thursday said that it would consider according an urgent hearing to a PIL seeking court-monitored SIT probe into allegations of corruption against various CBI officials, including Rakesh Asthana, who was divested of his responsibilities as the agency's special director. "The CBI was going to start an inquiry and therefore the prime minister got scared and removed the CBI chief at 1 am in the night", he alleged.

In a first for the 55-year old Central Bureau of Investigation, its Director Alok Verma, and Special Director Rakesh Asthana were stripped of their powers and sent on leave in a dramatic overnight action by the government.

The unprecedented clean-up operation in the CBI, which involved removing not just the top rung but several other investigating officers was a decisive step taken by the government.

Delhi Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) teams are looking into the matter. The men were caught by Verma's security guard and later taken inside the home.

It is also yet to be confirmed if they have been arrested.

Nageshwar Rao, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Odisha cadre, has been serving as Joint Director in the investigating agency since he joined the CBI in 2016.

But the opposition parties led by the Congress cried foul over the action against Verma. This is to secure independence of the CBI and this has been violated by the present order.

- The Supreme Court has stated repeatedly that the CBI ought to be insulated from the government.

The former CBI Director's petition further emphasised that, "The CBI ought to be insulated from Governmental interference and that is at the core value laid down by a common thread running through the Vineet Narain, CPIL, 2G and coal cases".

AK Bassi, who was probing the case against Asthana, was dispatched to Port Blair in public interest with immediate effect.
