Jamal Khashoggi: Erdoğan rejects Saudi account of killing

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was "savagely planned" by the Saudis.

Saudi Arabia, which for weeks maintained Khashoggi had left the consulate, on Saturday acknowledged he had been killed there in a "fistfight".

In a separate interview on 1310 News in Ottawa, Trudeau said he did not want Canadians "forking over billions of dollars to Saudi Arabia because we're standing up for human rights". Turkish media reports and officials maintain that a 15-member Saudi team flew to Istanbul on October 2, knowing Khashoggi would enter the consulate to get a document he needed to get married.

His speech, however, did little to advance the narrative of what happened to Khashoggi or to address previous rumors about the case.

"The more one thinks about it, the more it feels like our intelligence is being mocked", he wrote.

Mr Erdogan alleged the group then travelled to the consulate before it called the journalist to confirm his appointment to seek documentation he needed to marry his fiancee.

Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate by Saudi agents and his body cut up.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has briefly attended a high-profile economic forum in Riyadh that was boycotted by global business chiefs and politicians after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

At a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, King Salman again stressed that Saudi Arabia would hold those responsible for Khashoggi's slaying "accountable", according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

"This was an operation that was a rogue operation".

Members of Congress and former government officials have accused Riyadh of trying to cover up the truth behind Khashoggi's death or hide any evidence that the kingdom, particularly the crown prince, authorized it.

A friend of the Khashoggi family, who wishes to remain annoymous, claims that the travel ban was issued as a result of his father's criticism of the government.

Mr Hunt continued: 'The actions Britain and our allies take will depend on two things: firstly the credibility of the final explanation given by Saudi Arabia, and secondly on our confidence that such an appalling episode can not - and will not - be repeated'.

But, in some critical areas, his explanation appeared to depart from previous official statements.

That leaves open questions such as whether the Saudi operation in Istanbul was always meant to result in Khashoggi's death or whether the original plan was to kidnap and transport him to Saudi Arabia.

The crisis triggered by the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi is hurting Saudi Arabia's plans to attract and retain worldwide stock-market investors.

Qahtani, along with several other senior officials, have been fired from their government positions. That account includes details on how 15 Saudis sent to confront Khashoggi had threatened him with being drugged and kidnapped and killed him in a chokehold when he resisted.

On Monday, leaked surveillance video showed a man strolling out of the diplomatic post hours after Khashoggi disappeared into the consulate, apparently wearing the columnist's clothes as part of a macabre deception to sow confusion over his fate.
