Hamilton takes top position in United States with fifth title in sight

Hamilton takes top position in United States with fifth title in sight

Lewis Hamilton will have to wait another week to secure his fifth Formula One world crown after he finished third and Sebastian Vettel came home fourth at the United States Grand Prix. He'd driven his Ferrari to three second-place finishes this season before Sunday's victory.

Hamilton has won the U.S. Grand Prix five of the last six years and the last four in a row. He was then his typical stoic self after a brief victory celebration at the podium.

Raikkonen said: "It's been a pretty positive day". That makes a big difference.

Mercedes is not in a position to clinch the Constructors' Championship this weekend.

Schumacher won seven, two at Benetton and the rest with Ferrari, and retired with a record 91 wins.

For much of the year, Ferrari was believed to have the stronger race vehicle.

Once rejoining the race, Hamilton queried both the delay and the tyre choice Mercedes made, to take the softs rather than the super-softs Verstappen had taken.

"Championships are not won by doing silly mistakes. The end result is that I'm very excited about". "I don't care when you win a championship, just that you win".

"He would have been equally strong [as teammate Max Verstappen] in the second half of the race", Horner said.

"Everyone else improved much more on their second run, but I could not find more grip".

"I didn't really have any problems", he said after the race.

As for Vettel, he finished second, but with said grid penalty, he will start the race in fifth, with Kimi Raikkonen moved up into second.

When qualifying began, the two Ferrari men were swiftly setting the pace with Vettel on top early in Q1.

Vettel, starting fifth after he was penalised for failing to slow under red flags in practice, was out of contention for the win after just 13 corners.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who finished on the podium in three of the previous five races, will start 13th after he damaged his vehicle in the first round of qualifying.

Raikkonen's ability to keep Hamilton behind him gave Vettel new life and the chance to make the late pass on Bottas. "We've got to push hard for the next race". "Performance-wise, we were definitely off".

"Did you win the championship?" enquired 2007 world champion Raikkonen, whose previous win with Ferrari was in 2009.

Raikkonen will be leaving Ferrari to join Sauber after this season, moving from vehicle capable of winning to a team that is rarely competitive.

"I'm very happy where I'm going". We are close and I felt good with the auto. "It was a good battle and that's what we all want, the drivers, and the people here".
