Most states facing confirmed or possible cases of polio-like illness

Instances of a polio-like illness have been on the rise, affecting dozens of children across the United States.

AFM affects the nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, causing arms and legs to suddenly grow weak, sometimes leading to paralysis, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. She announced the numbers in a Tuesday media briefing.

Across the border in Pennsylvania, officials say there have been three confirmed cases of acute flaccid myelitis and one suspected case.

Robin Roberts of Richmond, Virginia, spoke with NBC News about the death of her 5-year-old son, Carter, last month after he became paralyzed from his nose down because of the illness in 2016. "You can't imagine the amount of suffering these kids have in their lives".

The North Dakota Department of Health is investigating a report of Acute flaccid myelitis in a North Dakota child.

However, as of October this year has already recorded 127 cases in 22 States.

The syndrome is suspected to be caused by one or more viruses.

"I would not be anxious because this is a cold virus like many other viruses". A research team led by Van Haren was the first to link acute flaccid myelitis with EV D68, back in 2015.

"There is not an outbreak of AFM", said Dr. Mobeen Rathore, chief of infectious diseases and immunology at Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, where a 3-year-old girl was diagnosed with AFM and is under care in the ICU.

Symptoms of AFM include sudden limb weakness, loss of muscle tone and reflexes, facial and eyelid drooping, difficulty moving the eyes, difficulty swallowing and slurred speech, the CDC said. Samples from some patients revealed the presence of enteroviruses, but others had been infected with a rhinovirus. The CDC says the main culprit can be a virus, environmental toxins, or genetic disorders. Officials would not say what states they lived in, but cases have been reported in New York, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado, and Washington. "The hallmark is sudden onset of weakness in the arms or the legs". Since the phenomenon began in 2014, she said, the rate of infections has been less than one case per 1 million children in the country.

What are the chances my child will get AFM?

There's no way to determine which child will development AFM, according to Glatter. The paralysis sets in about a week after the children have come down with fever and respiratory illness.

"There is a lot we don't know about AFM", Messonnier said during a teleconference for reporters.

The Norton cases are believed to be the only ones in Kentucky to date so far this year. And as of now, experts are not sure as to what exactly causes it. For reasons not fully understood, AFM affects mainly children. Nonetheless, the researchers found that the patients and families 'demonstrated a high degree of resilience and recovery.' 'The majority of these patients are left with extensive problems, ' said Pardo-Villamizar, who was not involved in the study.
