Woman captured on camera leaving toddler on stranger's doorstep

Authorities in Texas are seeking the public's help to identify a woman who left a 2-year-old child on a doorstep.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the woman, who is yet to be named, thought she was leaving him at his father's home at the time.

Surveillance video was released Thursday showing a woman running up to a Texas home, where sheriff's officials said she abandoned a small child and fled.

Following the release of a video broadcast by KTRK ABC13 in Houston, a man came forward claiming to be the father of two-year-old Royal Prince Simmons.

On arrival, police were shown surveillance camera footage from the residence and say the woman arrived in a white passenger vehicle.

Sometime later, the unidentified woman who'd been taking care of the child, walked up to a house she says she believed belonged to the boy's father, knocked on the door, rang the bell and ultimately left the toddler standing alone as she drove away.

Ring doorbell video captured the incident Wednesday night, which lasted about 23 seconds.

During a press conference Thursday, Lt. Scott Spencer with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said the homeowner who discovered the boy immediately called law enforcement.

Authorities said the child had been dropped off not only after the father had left, but at the wrong doorstep.

That was at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

A resident of the home went to answer the door and found the boy alone on the porch. "Deputies canvassed the area in an attempt to find anyone who knew the child but were unable to locate anyone".

Afterwards, the boy was taken into protective custody but within several hours, tips from the public identified him.

Deputies said the boy appears to be uninjured and in good health. She also left two bags behind. She could face a charge of child abandonment, Spencer said.

"The investigation is ongoing once completed the case will be submitted to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office for changes".
