Nepal storm kills several climbers in Himalayas

Nepal storm kills several climbers in Himalayas

Feted South Korean climber Kim Chang-ho, who in 2013 became the fastest person to summit the world's 14 highest mountains without using supplemental oxygen, is reportedly among the dead, according to local media.

Nepalese authorities said a storm had struck the group of climbers at the base camp of Mount Gurja, a 7,193-meter (23,599-foot) mountain in the Annapurna region. The body of one of the guides was taken to his village, while the eight others were flown to Kathmandu.

Four Nepalese sherpas were also killed.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, an amateur hiking enthusiast who visited Nepal in 2016, has expressed condolences for the climbers who died in a storm on a Nepal mountain.

'(A recovery team) could see the bodies of the climbers scattered near the camp'.

Nine climbers-five South Koreans and four Nepalis-died at the Mt Gurja based camp in Myagdi district when a violent snowstorm devastated their camp.

The team had embarked on a 45-day expedition to find a new route up Mt. Gurja on September 11, said Kim's representative agency, Eurasiatrek.

Two helicopters brought the bodies to Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, on Sunday from the mountain after the weather cleared up.

Four climbers have perished on Gurja´s flanks and a total of 30 have successfully reached its peak - a fraction of the more than 8,000 people who have summited Everest, the world´s highest mountain. Compare that to Mt. Everest, which more than 4,800 climbers have summited - many of them sherpa who have achieved the feat a couple of times.

Gurung said a rescue team hoped to return to the camp on Sunday if conditions improved.

An official from the Corean Alpine Club said the families of the deceased climbers and its club members originally planned to go to Nepal and cremate the bodies before transporting them to South Korea for funeral.

One of the world's best mountaineers was among nine climbers killed when a storm ripped through their camp on the slopes of Mount Gurja in Nepal.

The storm swept the camp on Friday night, and word of the destruction got out Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, a quick response team from the South Korean Foreign Ministry will head to Nepal on Monday afternoon to provide administrative assistance when transporting the bodies.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest, and the autumn climbing season is now at its height.
