Saudi Arabia says it will respond to any economic sanctions: SPA

President Donald Trump has vowed to seek "severe punishment" if officials from Saudi Arabia are found to have been involved in the disappearance of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia signaled on Sunday it may use its clout in the world economy to retaliate against any punitive measures, in an apparent reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to punish the world's largest oil-exporter over the disappearance of a government critic.

"The kingdom's economy has an influential and vital role in the global economy".

Turkish officials say they believe Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi mission and lurid claims suggesting he was tortured and even dismembered have been leaked to the media.

The statement aired on Saudi Arabian state media came after the country's stock market plunged by almost 7 per cent at one point on Sunday.

Trump has said the US would be "very upset and angry" if the Saudi government was behind it and, in an interview with "60 Minutes," he clarified that there would be "severe punishment".

There's something- you'll be surprised to hear me say that, there's something really awful and disgusting about that if that was the case so we're going to have to see.

Britain, France and Germany called on Saudi and Turkish authorities Sunday to undertake a "credible investigation" into the disappearance of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, stating that they are treating the event with "the utmost seriousness".

"This is happening at a time when Saudi Arabia is preparing for a big investment event and they don't need people suspending or pulling out investments", said Nadi Barghouti, head of asset management at Emirates Investment Bank in Dubai.

The Crown Prince has launched a series of social reforms in Saudi Arabia, including allowing women to drive.

A representative from Apple, however, confirmed the watches do not have fingerprint entry features, CNN reported on Saturday.

Trump told Stahl that Jared Kushner, his son-in-law and a senior White House adviser, spoke by phone with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who denied any involvement.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Yemeni Tawakkol Karman, flanked by Egytian opposition politican Ayman Nour, holds a picture of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a demonstration in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate on October 8, 2018, in Istanbul.

Saudi intelligence noticed the watch on Khashoggi's wrist "and tried to erase some files", the paper said.

While Saudi officials contend that Khashoggi went missing after exiting the building, the incident smells bad enough for some foreign executives to distance themselves from business ties to the Gulf country.

"You can hear his voice and the voices of the men speaking Arabic", a separate source told the Post, which employed Mr Khashoggi as a contributing columnist. Since Trump's election in 2016, the two countries signed agreements worth hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and weapons deals. Benchmark Brent crude is trading at around $80 a barrel, and Trump has criticized OPEC and Saudi Arabia over rising prices.

"I would hope that WWE will recognize on its own a conscience and conviction, if there is proof Saudi officials approved and ordered this kind of killing", he said.
