Google to shut down Google

Google said it plans to shut down Google+ for consumers and introduce new privacy tools for developers. The company said in a blog post that it was not aware that any outsider had discovered the bug or used it to gain improper access to user data, though in previous online security incidents, such discoveries sometimes lag by months or years after a computer bug has been initially reported.

The Journal reporters wrote that they reviewed a memo prepared by Google lawyers and policy experts who had warned that disclosing the glitch would cause "immediate regulatory interest" and "cause reputational damage".

Google says that 90 per cent of Google+ user sessions lasted for less than five seconds.

The information exposed in the Google+ data breach included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation, and relationship status.

"Our review showed that our Google+ APIs, and the associated controls for consumers, are challenging to develop and maintain". If you use the service for work, though, Google+ is not going anywhere.

In what has become an all-too-familiar scenario, the decision is subject to claim and counter-claim: The Wall Street Journal today alleged that Google covered up a programming blunder that would have exposed people's private Google+ account data to app developers, all because the advertising giant didn't want to have to deal with the PR and regulatory fallout from admitting it screwed up. This exploit was patched in the Spring, but Google isn't taking any more chances and is upping the ante on its API's as well as protecting its customers data. That right there means that Google had given up on the platform, when the team that is responsible for the product is no longer actively using the product, that is a very bad sign.

More information will be available over the coming months, including ways that users can download and migrate their data.

As many as 438 outside apps may have connected with the flawed software. They're also limiting app's access to your Gmail account moving forward, so only apps that "directly enhance" email functionality (like email clients and backup services) will be able to access your Gmail messages. By giving developers more explicit rules of the road, and helping users control your data, we can ensure that we keep doing just that. So, for example, your default messaging app will have access to SMS permissions, and the default dialer can access Call Logs.

Google also said it would begin restricting the data it provides to outside developers. The change makes it so users must individually grant or deny each permission to access data in their consumer Google account, rather than accept or deny permissions all at the same time.
