Brett Kavanaugh: Key test vote on Supreme Court nominee passes

Republican Senator Susan Collins was one of at least three pivotal swing votes, alongside Manchin and Murkowski, whose support was crucial to determining whether Kavanaugh is able to assume a seat on America's highest court.

Democrats and demonstrators vented their rage and resistance, but the Senate rolled toward approving Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination Saturday as President Donald Trump and Republicans approached an election-season triumph in the most electrifying confirmation battle in years.

The momentum seemed to be moving in Kavanaugh's direction as Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told reporters Friday afternoon that he plans to vote to confirm Kavanaugh "unless something big changes".

On the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that "nothing could get Democrats to consider this nominee with an open mind".

This behavior revealed a hostility and belligerence that is unbecoming of someone seeking to be elevated to the United States Supreme Court'.

But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer cryptically said he disagrees with Republican statements that the report showed "no hint of misconduct" by Kavanaugh - prompting reporters to ask Schumer what he meant before he walked away without another word.

US Senate: Don't Approve Kavanaugh Nomination

"At that time, I thought (Kavanaugh) had the qualifications for the Supreme Court should he be selected", former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens said at a Florida event on Thursday.

On the floor, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Kavanaugh confirmation was the "shameful culmination of scorched-earth politics practiced by the hard right". Steve Daines, R-Mont., said he would be attending his daughter's wedding in Montana on Saturday.

Senators held a procedural "roll call" poll on whether to advance Kavanaugh's nomination further, with 51 senators voting in favour.

Collins said that Kavanaugh had received "rave reviews" from his colleagues for his 12 years serving as a judge but ignored the American Bar Association's assessment that they will re-evaluate the Judge's evaluation due to "new information of a material nature regarding temperament".

Bennett said he personally supports the Kavanaugh nomination and is concerned that how the confirmation process has degenerated into such a partisan fight.

In the procedural ballot, senators voted 51-49 to limit debate, defeating Democratic efforts to scuttle the nomination with endless delays. Joe Manchin gave Kavanaugh his blessing. To this day, many Americans believe it was Palin that said "I can see Russian Federation from my house" when in fact the line was delivered by Tina Fey. He has denied her allegations, as well as allegations of sexual misconduct from two other women.

Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, who chairs the judiciary committee, issued a statement late Thursday that said the Federal Bureau of Investigation reached out to 11 people and interviewed 10.

Mrs Ford and Mr Kavanaugh testified at a dramatic Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week in which she described the alleged assault, and Mr Kavanaugh denied all of the allegations against him, while accusing the Democrats of a political "hit". They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing allegations of connections between the president's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation tried to pursue him in court.
