Ryder Cup: Infographic breaks down differences between each team

Ryder Cup: Infographic breaks down differences between each team

Europe took tighter control of the Ryder Cup as three points from four in Saturday morning's fourballs sent them charging into an 8-4 lead going into the afternoon's foursomes.

Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter were 2 UP on the final USA pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas after three holes but the tide soon started to turn.

USA skipper Jim Furyk left out Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed after their defeat by Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood got Europe on the board, and his players totally lost the momentum they had built up earlier in the day. With four birdies over their last five holes, they won 4 and 3.

It was just the pair of Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm who weren't able to get another point for Europe, as Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas painted at least a small part of the scoreboard red.

Europe has a 5-3 advantage going into the second day of the Ryder Cup, a lead that feels even bigger with the momentum from its first sweep of a session since 1989.

Poulter and McIlroy got off to a great start when they went 2 UP after three holes.

The struggling "Captain America" Patrick Reed is coupled with fiery Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, and bringing up the rear in the anchor match are Alex Noren and Bryson DeChambeau.

"The Europeans played very good golf this afternoon on a hard setup and in hard conditions and we didn't play our best golf".

The Americans entered this Ryder Cup as the favorites. And three holes later, Spieth and Thomas now lead by 2.

The 28-year-old's wild tee shot on the par-4 sixth hole struck a woman in the gallery in the eye, bloodying her head.

But the 14-time major champion lost his way on the back nine, with him and Reed both finding water and missing several fairways, leaving Molinari with a simple two-putt to get Europe on the board.

Paris is known as the "City of Light", but US is facing dark times after Europe edged to a commanding 10-6 lead heading into Sunday's final singles session at the Ryder Cup. The U.S. came back from 10-6 down at Brookline in 1999; the Europeans did it at Medinah in 2012.

"We've got a lot of work to do, but we've still got a chance", Simpson told Sky Sports. "Playing Ryder Cups over here are extremely fun", said three-time major victor Spieth.

Poulter held his nerve over a six-footer on the sixth after Spieth's lovely approach to within a few feet had opened the door for the Americans, and then produced a characteristic slice of Poulter Ryder Cup magic with a sensational putt from right across the seventh green to put Europe up for the first time.

"We know exactly what the issue has been, " Mickelson said prior to the Ryder Cup.
