Is Bill Cosby a Registered Sex Offender? What His Sentence Means

Is Bill Cosby a Registered Sex Offender? What His Sentence Means

The 81-year-old actor and comedian has been sentenced to no less than three years in state prison for sexually assaulting a former Temple University employee at his home in 2004.

Arguing over Cosby being ruled as a sexually violent predator, his counsel conveyed it to the judge that Pennsylvania's sex-offender law remains unconstitutional despite several revisions on sexually violent predator designation.

Judge O'Neill also made a decision to designate Cosby a "sexually violent predator" under Pennsylvania law.

With his sentence, Judge Steven O'Neill sided with prosecutors, who were seeking a five-to-10-year prison sentence.

Apart from the label, Cosby still faces a maximum prison term of 10 years after an agreement between prosecutors and his defence team, but there is no mandatory minimum for the convictions.

Cosby was found guilty in April on three counts of aggravated indecent assault.

Five women who claim they were drugged by Cosby, including Dickinson and three others who claim they were also sexually assaulted by him, testified against Cosby during his second trial.

Tuesday's sentencing was a reckoning accusers and prosecutors said was decades in the making for the once-beloved entertainer known for his role as wise and understanding Dr Cliff Huxtable on the top-ranked, 1980s-era Cosby Show.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said the 81-year-old used his fame and fortune to "hide his true self and hide his crimes", intimidating his victims into keeping them silent for decades. He said Cosby "could quite possibly be a danger to the community".

Ms Constand went to police a year after waking up confused at Cosby's gated estate, only to have the district attorney pass on the case.

Cosby arrived Monday with his spokespeople, Andrew Wyatt and Ebonee Benson. He told Constand, "I heard the very clear impact on your life." . His lawyers are arguing that Cosby should remain on home confinement pending appeals. Timothy P. Foley, a licensed psychologist who met with Cosby, testified for the defense on Tuesday that sex offense recidivism becomes "almost negligible" for people over the age of 70.

Prison officials will process Cosby at the nearby state prison in Schwenksville before determining in which of Pennsylvania's 22 male prisons he will serve his sentence, prison spokeswoman Amy Worden wrote in an email. Jurors convicted Cosby of sexually assaulting Andrea Constand without consent, while she was impaired and after incapacitating her. Cosby declined to participate in the evaluation by Dudley, who said she came to her determination by reviewing trial transcripts and other reports.

During victim impact statements on Monday, Constand's mother told the court that her family feels vindicated. "Because Constand's case is one of the few to fall within the statute of limitations, her trial is informally considered a representation of the large number of Cosby accusers".

But Steele says it's ridiculous to think Cosby should get what Steele called a "get out of jail free card" because it took this long to catch up with him.

Cosby broke barriers in the 1960s as the first black actor to star in a network show.
