Russian Federation says will send newer S-300 missile systems to Syria

Russia has said the S-200 system is not advanced enough for the Syrian military to distinguish Russian planes as friendly ones.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Russian news agencies that supplying S-300 to Syria is Russia's "own right" and expressed confidence that this would not hurt Russia's ties with Israel. Putin says "a chain of tragic circumstances" is to be blamed for a Russian military aircraft shot down by a Syrian missile.

Last week's crash, which killed 15 Russian service members, had forced Moscow to take "adequate retaliatory measures to increase the safety of Russian military fighting global terrorism in Syria", Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday in a televised address.

"We are certain that the realization of these measures will cool the "hot heads" and will keep them from poorly thought-out actions which threaten our servicemen", Shoigu said.

But after the downing of the plane last week, "the situation has changed", Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in an address carried live on national television.

Israel said its F-16s had already returned to Israeli airspace by the time the Russian craft was downed and blamed Syria's armed forces for indiscriminate fire.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin on Monday accused Israeli pilots of acting deliberately and said the downing of the Russian plane would harm relations between the two countries.

The Israeli military on Sunday rejected Konashenkov's remarks, claiming mechanisms to coordinate with Russian Federation were used properly ahead of the Il-20's downing. On top of that, the Russian military will start using electronic countermeasures to jam any aircraft that would try to launch attacks off Syria's coast. It is possible that these aircraft delivered of the S-300 air defense systems to Syria.

Putin informed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about the missile delivery in a phone call on Monday, according to a statement issued by Syria's presidency. Russia laid the blame squarely on Israel, saying that its fighter jet pushed the Russian aircraft into the line of fire. He said US troops would stay active in Syria as long as Iran was involved.

Moscow first announced that it was considering reversing its longtime policy against supplying the S-300 system to the regime following a series of airstrikes against Syrian targets by the United States, United Kingdom and France in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by Assad.

But when the dust settled, blame fell on Israel.

Syrian air-defense command units will be connected directly to Russian command posts with automated systems that at present are deployed only in Russian units, he said.
