O'Rourke, Cruz clash over shootings in debate

O'Rourke, Cruz clash over shootings in debate

That depends on who you ask. O'Rourke pushed back.

The debate, the first of three scheduled in the Senate midterms, was held on the campus of Southern Methodist University, and Mr. O'Rourke remained unflappable while taking on Mr.

"Talking about criminal justice reform, let's talk about where this problem started", he said at Prairie View A&M University in Texas.

"Thoughts and prayers, Senator Cruz, are just not going to cut it anymore". "I can only tell you that I was able to have a second chance in my life".

I also went to the cotton gin in Roscoe.

The debate was feisty from the opening question, which was about whether "Dreamers" - young people who were brought to the country illegally as children - should be given a path to citizenship.

"To rewrite our immigration laws in our own image and to ensure that we begin by freeing Dreamers from the fear of deportation by making them USA citizens, they can contribute to their full potential", O'Rourke said. The Democrat responded by saying he would work with anyone at anytime, including the president. "We can make our schools safer by having officers protect them".

Cruz said 'absolutely, ' but didn't elaborate while calling the allegations serious.

Democrats have long dreamed of flipping heavily Hispanic Texas, the country's largest red state, and transforming the national electoral map.

U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke of El Paso, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, took a newly aggressive tack against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz in their first debate Friday evening.

Cruz and O'Rourke faced off in their first debate ahead of November 6's congressional elections at Southern Methodist University in Dallas on Friday, and Cruz's strategy swiftly became clear: Paint O'Rourke as too radical for this traditionally Republican state. Cruz said it's a slap in the face to veterans.

Nonetheless, O'Rourke has raised significantly out-raised Cruz. "No one wants to do any of that".

While Cruz and Trump were bitter rivals during the 2016 presidential race, the president and his family are working to help Cruz's campaign. A Quinnipiac poll showed the gap between the two as wider, with Cruz receiving 54 percent support among likely voters and O'Rourke receiving 45 percent support.

President Trump announced that he'll rally in Texas for his once bitter rival Cruz next month - previously unthinkable in a state where Republicans usually rack up landslide victories.

Sen. Ted Cruz slammed his opponent for the "extreme rhetoric" and defended the integrity of the vast majority of law enforcement officers. "No one here, including myself, has suggested anyone should be doing that", he said.

That ignored Cruz drawing the ire of many Texas conservatives for refusing to endorse Trump during the 2016 Republican National Convention.

O'Rourke in turn blasted Cruz for supporting massive deportations of illegal immigrants.
