UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo

UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is consoled by teammate Federico Bernardeschi after receiving a red card during the Champions League, group H soccer match between Valencia and Juventus.

Ronaldo tangled with Valencia's Jeison Murillo, appearing to tug at the defender's hair, in the first half of Juventus' 2-0 win on Wednesday (NZT Thursday).

Ronaldo was shown a straight red card after appearing to raise his hand to Murillo, the defender tumbling to the ground and reacting to the Portugal worldwide pulling at his hair.

Reacting emotionally to the referee's decision, Ronaldo fell on the ground in disbelief and left the pitch with teary eyes and frustration.

However, the red card in midweek means he will be suspended for the next group match against Swiss side Young Boys on October 2 with the possibility of the ban being extended.

UEFA's disciplinary committee will now have a look at the red card incident, and determine whether or not Ronaldo will receive a three-game ban.

"You can't risk compromising a game and, above all, a competition with a moment like that, which could result in a two-match ban".

Despite that, World Cup victor Lippi said the decision signalled the need for VAR to be introduced in the Champions League. "If you give cheap goals away it is hard".

"Referee Felix Brych had his back to the incident".

"It is very disappointing, we nearly lost because of that and we will be without Ronaldo for the next (game)".

Can's comment led to accusations of sexism on social media, with some users even calling for the Germany global to be banned, but the former Liverpool midfielder has claimed there was no intention to degrade women.

- Cristiano Ronaldo did not deserve to see red says Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone.
