Florence could bring record rainfall to the Carolinas as it comes onshore

Florence could bring record rainfall to the Carolinas as it comes onshore

Florence also blew down trees, including one that went through the roof of Kevin DiLoreto's home in Wilmington.

The US Army Corps of Engineers said it is monitoring two North Carolina dams - in Wake Forest and Cary - as well as three additional ones in Virginia.

Avair Vereen, 39, took her seven children to a shelter in Conway High School near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Near the beach in Wilmington, a Waffle House restaurant, part of a chain with a reputation for staying open during disasters, had no plans to close, even if power was lost, and there were lines to get in on Thursday evening. The number of people still not rescued fell to about 40 by Friday afternoon, according to New Bern Mayor Dana Outlaw.

As a Category 3 and 4 storm, Florence has been pushing massive waves toward the East Coast for days, creating the momentum for a pile of ocean water to infiltrate inland. North Carolina corrections officials said more than 3,000 people were relocated from adult prisons and juvenile centers in the path of Florence, and more than 300 county prisoners were transferred to state facilities.

Over 770,000 were without power in North Carolina Friday night. She said 61 shelters had opened thus far, including 12 that are specially outfitted to help people with special medical needs.

Regardless of whether or not Florence moves inland swiftly or stalls, unsafe surf conditions will extend as far to the north as Nova Scotia, as far to the south as the east-central Florida coast and the northeast-facing shoreline of the Bahamas and as far to the east as Bermuda.

Florence is expected to slowly move west-southwest through early Saturday. Meanwhile, the storm is forecast to move sluggishly over the Carolinas before turning northwest. Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.

"Hurricane Florence was uninvited but she's just about here anyway", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference, warning residents to stay vigilant despite the downgrade.

"There is going to be a lot of rain".

"The magnitude of the storm is beyond what we have seen in years", Duke Energy incident commander Howard Fowler said in a statement. "Our meteorologists are saying that the rainfall amounts will be devastating in certain areas", he said.

Southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern SC could see 20 to 30 inches of rainfall; some isolated areas could see 40 inches.

Forecasters also say the storm surge - or wall of water - that the hurricane's winds and forward movement push on shore, could cause normally dry areas to be flooded by up to 4 meters of water moving inland.

The remainder of SC and North Carolina into southwest Virginia could see 5 to 10 inches, with some isolated areas seeing 15 inches. The storm surge alone is likely to flood tens of thousands of structures.

About 800 flights in the region have been canceled ahead of the storm, CNN reported.

Rivers are expected to burst their banks. Some 1.7 million people have been ordered to evacuate from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The White House on Saturday said President Donald Trump had approved making federal funding available in some counties.

By Friday night the center of the storm had moved to eastern SC, about 15 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Definitely the storm surge, which could be up to 11 feet in some locations.

A hurricane warning is in effect for South Santee River, SC, north to Duck, NC, and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

By mid-afternoon the winds had dropped to 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and the centre was moving west at 6 miles per hour (10 kph), the NHC said, and parts of North and SC would get as much as 40 inches of rain (1 metre).

Tropical Storm Isaac became Tropical Depression Isaac Friday morning. Members of the U.S. National Guard marched in and out of a room nearest the main entrance, their camouflage uniforms standing out in the drab room.

Yet another tropical storm formed in the Atlantic Thursday night.

By 5 p.m. on Thursday, the Governor and other officials delivered their final briefing before the eye of the storm was set to strike.

It had sustained winds of 90 miles per hour and was moving in a northwest direction. It's forecast to turn northeastward and accelerate in that direction over the weekend.
