Police chase shuts down France's Lyon airport runway

Police chase shuts down France's Lyon airport runway

A spokesperson for the Rhône prefecture said of the incident: "Around 10.30 this morning an individual travelling in the wrong direction on the A43 motorway was pursued by members of the motorway CRS (police) and a helicopter from the National Gendarmerie".

French police arrested a man Monday after a high-speed chase on the runway at Lyon airport in southeast France which ended with him trying to flee on foot, local officials said.

Nobody was injured in the incident but several flights had to be diverted, according to the flight-tracking application Flightradar24.

Before driving onto the runway, the man drove the into the glass doors of one of the terminals.

The dramatic runway chase, witnessed by an AFP journalist waiting on a plane at the airport, was captured in another amateur video shared thousands of times on social media.

There, he rammed into automatic glass doors near the main entrance to Terminal 1 and drove through the building.

As police closed in, the man then jumped out of the vehicle and ran away on foot.

Before driving onto the runway the man had driven the vehicle into the glass doors of one of the airport terminals.

The man's motives were unknown and nothing was being ruled out, regional government press officer Christelle Monteagudo said.

The man is then seen nearly crashing into an embankment and then fleeing on foot as he is eventually swarmed by police, despite his best efforts to outrun them.

"Arriving at the Lyon-Bron airport, he forced his way through the security barriers before heading towards the airport of Lyon Saint-Exupéry where again, he forced the security barriers with his vehicle".

He added that auto was "almost certainly stolen", with a source close to the inquiry saying it had Luxembourg license plates.

Flights at the airport were grounded.
