Woods and McIlroy share lead at BMW Championship

Woods and McIlroy share lead at BMW Championship

Tiger Woods is doing that thing he does where he gets everyone all riled up early in a tournament. Tiger was bogey-free through nine, sinking four birdies and eagling the par-5 16th, his seventh hole of the day.

He added another birdie on the first hole, his 10th of the day, to get to seven-under. Rickie Fowler opened with a 65 in his first tournament since the PGA Championship, and at times it felt like he was getting lapped playing alongside Woods.

A day after shooting 62 and looking like the Tiger of old with his Scotty Cameron putter back in his bag, Woods's round on Friday reminded us just how hard it is to follow up a season-best round with another low one.

Woods and McIlroy still had to hit the shots and make the putts.

"Just the way it goes", Woods said with a smile, caring more about a complete round of golf and a strong performance with his old putter than whether he was leading after one round in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He also birdied 18.

"I've got to make birdies over the weekend". "Boy, shooting 29 on the front nine helps". "I lose strength and I lose power and endurance".

He was near the lead when he finished his round, but numerous other 69 players in the field-only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings qualified for this event-were shooting similarly impressive scores on an immaculate day for scoring.

"That round today (could have) easily been six or seven under; it turned into even par which is not what I needed to do (when) everyone is going low and birdies should be had".

American Xander Schauffele backed up his superb opening round to card a solid six-under par 64 on day two to hold the outright lead with most of the second round complete in Philadelphia. He was 1-over after eight and made his first birdie of the day on No. 9.
